Interested in summer volunteer opportunities for students 15 and older in Hampton Roads ? The CHKD Junior Volunteer program application process opened today for first time volunteers. You can find the online application, forms and details at www.chkd.org/jrvolunteer.

Each year, teenagers who turn 15 on or before June 1 and are still in high school can apply to participate in our Summer Junior Volunteer Program. Apply here.

Nearly 20 years after his cancer diagnosis in 2006, Ian recently reunited with the physician his family calls “Superman,” Dr. Eric Lowe. While attending a retreat at the Sanderling Resort, Dr. Lowe stopped by Roadside Bar & Grill in Duck, NC, where Ian now works as a chef!

We’re proud to be part of Ian’s journey and grateful for physicians like Dr. Lowe who leave a lifelong impact on the patients and families they serve.

Meet Thomas. 💪

Since birth, Thomas has faced complex medical challenges, including a genetic condition that causes frequent respiratory infections, and Poland syndrome and pectus excavatum – both chest wall conditions. Over the years, he’s received comprehensive care from many CHKD specialists, helping him stay healthy and active.

When Thomas’ pectus excavatum became severe, CHKD’s internationally recognized Nuss Center took a customized surgical approach to correct his chest wall and provide additional stability. After surgery, Thomas noticed major improvements: easier breathing, better balance, increased strength, and a big boost in confidence.

We are so excited to announce 2025 Junior Volunteer Sam Sachs was presented with the Outstanding Youth Volunteer Award at recent the Governor's Volunteerism & Community Service Awards Ceremony! Read all about Sam's efforts to raise funds and support for other families at CHKD. Amazing job Sam!

Join us in congratulating Sam Sachs, a CHKD patient ambassador and junior volunteer, on receiving the Governor's Award for Volunteerism & Community Service!

At only 11 years old, Sam turned his battle with leukemia into a powerful mission to support others. In 2021, he founded Sam’s Warriors and has since raised more than $110,000 to help CHKD patients and their families - providing meaningful assistance to over 100 patient families in our community.

Sam continues to volunteer his time, share his story, and lead service projects that inspire hope in others. We are so proud of Sam's dedication to helping others and are honored to be a part of his journey.

Every ounce of care makes a difference for our tiniest fighters.

Today, on World Prematurity Day, we’re celebrating the strength of our NICU babies, their families, and the incredible people who support them.

CHKD’s NICU provides lifesaving care for premature and medically fragile infants. And when a mother’s own milk isn’t available, The King’s Daughters Milk Bank at CHKD helps nourish these infants – as well as babies in NICUs along the East Coast – thanks to the generosity of dedicated milk donors.

It’s the care, expertise, and collaboration behind the scenes that help give premature babies the healthiest possible start. 💜
