A family nurse practitioner and lactation consultant at Sentara Leigh Hospital, Jessica has made it her mission to support new moms. Through revitalized “mom groups,” fierce patient advocacy, and heartfelt encouragement - especially for mothers who may feel unheard - she’s made a life-changing impact on families in Hampton Roads.

Colleagues describe her as relentless, compassionate, and the kind of person who “will go to the end of the earth” for her patients and team.

Jessica says moms are the real heroes — she’s just grateful to support them. 💕

We're hiring Mammography Technologists to staff our Mobile Mammography units, bringing life-saving breast cancer screenings directly to communities across Virginia. In this role, you’ll perform screening and diagnostic mammography and bone densitometry imaging studies, support patients through every step of their exam, and help ensure high-quality imaging and compassionate care on the road.

He was a fighter pilot who completed two tours in Vietnam. She was a young nurse. They met in New York and three months later, they were married. 68 years later, they're still inseparable. ❤️

During patient rounding, Walter Wesolowski shared that he didn't want to miss celebrating his 68th wedding anniversary with his wife, Marie.

Immediately, our food services team jumped into action and created a special fine dining experience complete with surf and turf and a sweet treat so they could enjoy the special day together.

Sentara Health has launched a robotic-assisted bronchoscopy program at Sentara Leigh Hospital, bringing advanced, minimally invasive technology to improve the early detection of lung cancer and other pulmonary conditions. 🏥🤖

Using 3D CT imaging, real-time robotic guidance, and x-ray team support, physicians can precisely navigate the lungs to biopsy small or hard-to-reach nodules — helping patients receive faster, more accurate diagnoses. 🫁✨ Most procedures take about an hour, require no incisions, and allow patients to return home the same day.

“This technology allows us to reach areas of the lung that were previously very difficult to access,” said Dr. Simanta Dutta, Sentara pulmonologist and program lead. “Earlier and more precise diagnoses mean patients can begin treatment sooner.”

This new program strengthens Sentara’s regional lung diagnostics network and reflects our continued commitment to advancing cancer detection and care for the communities we serve. 💙

When Lillie Martinez welcomed her son Jesse Joe, she expected pure joy. Instead, she found herself struggling with postpartum depression and anxiety, feelings she says many moms are afraid to admit.

Lillie isn’t alone. At least 1 in 7 mothers experiences perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs), which can include anxiety, rage, intrusive thoughts, and difficulty bonding, not just depression.

During a lactation consultation at Sentara Leigh Hospital, Lillie broke down and found support from family nurse practitioner Jessica Schafer, who now helps moms navigate both feeding and postpartum mental health. That honest conversation changed everything.

Today, Lillie and her family are thriving, and she hopes sharing her story helps other moms feel less alone. As Schafer reminds mothers: you don’t have to live like this. Help is available, and it does get better. 💙✨

🚀 Faster labs. Better care.

We've launched a new state-of-the-art pneumatic tube system that’s transforming how quickly lab results reach our care teams. The upgraded system transports 1,300 lab specimens every day through a mile-and-a-half network of hospital tubing, improving both speed and accuracy.

While pneumatic tube systems aren’t new to hospitals, this advanced technology represents a significant upgrade — helping our teams deliver timely, high-quality care to patients when it matters most. 💙

A new concealed weapons detection system is now in place at our front entrance, the same system currently used at our Emergency Department entrance. All individuals entering through the front entrance will pass through the screening system.

Even The Grinch couldn’t steal our Christmas joy! 🎄💚 He stopped by with some admirable attempts to cause mischief, but this hospital was bursting with too much holiday cheer for him to handle. Instead, The Grinch spent time visiting patients and staff, all under the watchful (and very prepared 👀) eyes of our security team.

Did he succeed at stealing anything? Well… he did manage to snag a cookie from one of the gingerbread houses competing for the top spot in this year’s contest. 🍪🏠 We’ll call that a small win for the Grinch.

Turns out, hearts (and spirits) grew three sizes that day! ❤️🎁
