This week, we're recognizing the members of our Cardiac Rehabilitation team.

Cardiac rehab is an exercise and education program to improve quality of life after a cardiac event. Patients regain their heart's strength, and classes provide a social network to help patients motivate each other. Patients also learn exercises they can do at home to lower the risk of future heart issues. To learn more about the program, speak with your provider or visit https://www.carle.org/heart.

February is Heart Month and here are three ways to keep your heart healthier from Cardiologist Kartik Mehta, DO.

1) Try to get seven-nine hours of sleep per night. Lack of sleep increases your risk of heart attack so try to get those hours of rest in. 2) Brush your teeth. Chronic gum disease causes inflammation and bacteria in your mouth can enter your blood stream and increase your heart attack risk. 3) Get up and move! Studies from the America College of Cardiology show that if you have a sedentary lifestyle, as many of us do, you have an increased risk of heart failure and heart attack.

We are grateful to have Dr. Perdekamp caring for our patients at Carle Cancer Institute Normal.

The Carle Cancer Institute in Urbana, the Stephens Family Clinical Research Institute and Maria Perdekamp, MD, oncologist conducted research on cold cap treatment for patients who could experience hair loss during medical treatment.

“Cold capping can significantly reduce or even prevent hair loss during taxane-based chemotherapy," Dr. Perdekamp explained. "The emotional impact of losing your hair while fighting a serious illness is often underestimated. Cold capping offers a way for patients to feel like themselves again, providing essential confidence and a sense of control during their recovery."

Originally, 20 spots were allotted for patients to participate in the cool cap study, but as patient interest exceeded that number, additional study slots were allotted. More information will be shared as the study results are released.
