HALO Program Heartland Academy for Learning Opportunities

Since 2009, the Heartland Academy for Learning Opportunities has provided postsecondary opportunities to students ages 18-28 with intellectual, cognitive and developmental disabilities. HALO students build personal and social skills through a balanced learning experience that includes reading, writing, math, and technology. In addition, the program offers these students an opportunity to experience life on a college campus while developing self-determination, independent living, and employability skills.

Get to Know Luke Hanson. Luke is a HALO Class of 2024 graduate. He enjoys taking walks and playing video games in his free time and hopes to one day work at the airport. He shared that his favorite part of the Transition year is "everything!" Next year Luke will be attending Barnabus Prep in Missouri.

Get to Know Our Transition Students!
CJ graduated from the HALO Program in 2025. He enjoys watching TV in his free time and wants to learn to take Connect Transit and go shopping all by himself. CJ said the most helpful thing about the Transition Year was his Life Success class. After Transition he plans to continue working at the Baby Fold as a janitor.

Are you interested in being a part of HALO this fall?
Step 1: Set up a campus visit--Go to our website and sign up for a time to visit campus, see a HALO class and learn more about our program.
Step 2: Apply--Complete all application materials available on our website at heartland.edu/halo and submit by July 6, 2026.
Step 3: Interview--Come in for an interview and find out if HALO is the right fit for you

Students enjoyed free coffee and conversational prompts with the SAAS team, mental health information from counseling, making bracelets, creating an aromatherapy oil, a chance to interact with a therapy dog, and free wellness journals!

Faith graduated from the HALO Program in 2025. Her hobbies include reading, baking and spending time with her family. Faith’s career goal is to become a zoologist. Her favorite thing about the Transition Year has been the teachers and being with friends. After Transition Year Faith plans on continuing her path towards earning her Associates Degree.

This event will take place February 24th and 25th from 11am-1pm in the WDC Atrium. This event will highlight the importance of one's mental health through engaging activities and collaboration with activities, free food, free t-shirts, and more!
