HALO Program Heartland Academy for Learning Opportunities

Since 2009, the Heartland Academy for Learning Opportunities has provided postsecondary opportunities to students ages 18-28 with intellectual, cognitive and developmental disabilities. HALO students build personal and social skills through a balanced learning experience that includes reading, writing, math, and technology. In addition, the program offers these students an opportunity to experience life on a college campus while developing self-determination, independent living, and employability skills.

Heartland Community College Student Counseling and Wellness Services will be hosting a Mental Health Fair on Normal Campus to help celebrate mental health promotion and su***de prevention awareness! This event will take place February 24th and 25th from 11am-1pm in the WDC Atrium. This event will highlight the importance of one's mental health through engaging activities and collaboration with activities, free food, free t-shirts, and more!

Yesterday, our HALO Transition students visited Evergreen Senior Living Center in Normal. They enjoyed spending time with residents playing Bingo and had the opportunity to learn about the various career paths available in an assisted living setting. The day concluded with lunch at Bojangles, making it a fun and meaningful community-based learning experience.

Get to Know Our Transition Students!
Elexa graduated from the HALO Program in 2025. Her hobbies are martial arts, learning sign language, and playing bocce. Her goals are to get a job working with kids at the zoo and to take classes at Heartland. Her favorite thing about Transition year is having a peer mentor. After Transition year, Elexa plans to take credit classes at Heartland.

Join us as you’ll design and decorate your own Valentine’s Day cards and make handmade flowers using pipe cleaners and ribbon. Get to Know Our Transition Students!
Jared Witte is a HALO graduate, Class of 2025. He likes to read and play video games and hopes to get a job this summer.
