HALO Program Heartland Academy for Learning Opportunities

Since 2009, the Heartland Academy for Learning Opportunities has provided postsecondary opportunities to students ages 18-28 with intellectual, cognitive and developmental disabilities. HALO students build personal and social skills through a balanced learning experience that includes reading, writing, math, and technology. In addition, the program offers these students an opportunity to experience life on a college campus while developing self-determination, independent living, and employability skills.

HALO 2-Year classes begin one week from today! Are you interested in what you'll be learning this semester? All students in the 2-Year program will take Reading and Writing for Life, where you'll be exposed to various types of materials adults need to read and understand in your daily life and use comprehension skills and strategies to increase your understanding of what you read. You will also use writing skills to organize and present information.
You'll also take Money Skills and Cooking Skills, each for 8 weeks. You'll learn basic money skills including money value, money handling, shopping, budgeting, bill paying and banking. You'll also learn to cook and prepare food quickly while considering menu selection, food preparation, basic cooking, food hygiene and personal safety.
