Colder weather arrives soon in Oklahoma, meaning stiffer and more painful joints for patients with new and existing orthopedic conditions.

Changes in barometric pressure, decreased blood circulation, and reduced exercise in winter months can all contribute to the discomfort patients feel during temperature fluctuations. You may be at increased risk for joint discomfort if you have had the following:

β€’ Joint replacement surgery, including the knees, hips and shoulders
β€’ Have been diagnosed with arthritis (including rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and gout)
β€’ Suffer from previous sports-related injuries such as ACL tears, bone fractures or dislocation
β€’ Other chronic autoimmunine disease that causes inflammation in the joints during cold temperatures

Our experienced orthopedic physicians at Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Center are equipped with treatment options to help ease the cold weather challenges that plague patients' joint health during winter months. Whether you are exploring new treatment options for yourself or a family member or are ready to pursue a surgical solution to an existing issue, our talented team of experts will guide you through the best treatment plan for your lifestyle and goals.

If you are ready to take the first step toward optimal joint health, call our office today at 405-364-7900 to schedule your appointment.

If you have been diagnosed with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes, you are aware of how critical checking your blood sugar is for your overall health. You have likely also been educated on the importance of maintaining the health of your feet but may not understand the benefit of seeking established care with a podiatrist.

Podiatrists perform highly thorough diabetic foot exams to ensure your feet are healthy. During a diabetic foot exam, you can expect your podiatrist to
β€’ Ask questions about your medical history
β€’ Check your feet for any deformities (such as hammertoe or bunions) that may cause changes in the shape of your foot. These changes can cause friction while walking, leading to blisters and sores.
β€’ Look for signs of nerve damage (diabetic neuropathy) or issues with poor circulation. Your podiatrist will check your pulse in your ankle and foot for confirmation of vascular health.
β€’ Ensure nails are not infected or ingrown (podiatrists are trained to trim nails safely for diabetic patients and remove ingrown toenails, when required)
β€’ Exam your shoes to ensure that they fit properly and do not cause excessive rubbing. Podiatrists can determine if you are a good candidate for custom fit orthotics to maximize your foot health.

Delaying proper preventative foot exams and treatments can have serious complications for diabetic patients, including amputation of the foot in the most serious cases.

With locations in Stillwater and Norman, our podiatrists are available to assist with nail trimmings, answer questions about your foot health, and surgically correct issues prior to more severe complications. Contact our office at 405-364-7900 for more information.

Sometimes, gratitude is best expressed with the simplest of words: thank you. Today, we humbly thank those who served our country with pride, protected our Constitution through brave and selfless acts, and made personal sacrifices for our freedom.

Our very own Dr. Porritt is among those that we recognize today, and we are grateful for his service to his country.

Happy Veteran's Day to our exceptional men and women that took an oath as the keepers of our Constitution. We are thankful for you daily.
