Robert E. Shalhope

Robert Ely Shalhope, 84, passed away on November 7, 2025 after a long and fulfilling life.

Bob was born on February 24, 1941, in Kansas City Missouri to Lee and Cecile Shalhope. He grew up in LaGrange Illinois.

Dr. Robert E. Shalhope was a devoted historian, teacher, and scholar whose career at the University of Oklahoma spanned more than forty years. After earning his B.A. from DePauw University in 1963 and his M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Missouri, he joined the faculty at the University of Oklahoma in 1967. Over the decades, he served as Assistant, Associate, and full Professor of History, and was honored as the George Lynn Cross Professor of History. He retired as Professor Emeritus in 2007.

An accomplished scholar, Dr. Shalhope authored several influential books, including Sterling Price: Portrait of a Southerner, John Taylor of Caroline: Pastoral Republican, The Roots of Democracy: American Culture and Thought, 1760–1800, and Bennington and the Green Mountain Boys: The Emergence of Liberal Democracy in Vermont, 1760–1850. His later works, A Tale of New England: The Diaries of Hiram Harwood and The Baltimore Bank Riot: Political Upheaval in Antebellum Maryland, further reflected his deep engagement with the study of American republicanism and early national political culture.

Dr. Shalhope’s scholarship profoundly shaped understanding of early American political thought, particularly the development of republicanism and the ideological origins of the Second Amendment. His essays appeared in leading journals such as the William and Mary Quarterly, Journal of Southern History, and Journal of American History.

He was recognized nationally for his scholarship, receiving fellowships from both the National Endowment for the Humanities and Harvard University’s Charles Warren Center for Studies in American History. In 2000, he served as Visiting Professor of Modern History at the University of Glasgow in Scotland, sharing his expertise abroad and forming lasting friendships with fellow historians. Even after retirement, he remained engaged with his field, continuing to read, write, and discuss history with enthusiasm.

Throughout his career, Bob was known not only for his intellectual rigor but also for his warmth and generosity as a mentor. His office door was always open to students, and he inspired generations to think critically about history and the meaning of citizenship. Colleagues remember him as a thoughtful scholar, a dedicated teacher, and a kind friend with a dry wit and a deep love of conversation. Dr. Shalhope’s legacy endures through his writings, his students, and the countless lives he touched during his long and remarkable career.

Bob found joy in life’s simple pleasures and cherished time spent in nature, with family and close friends. He and Emma, spent many years on Martha’s Vineyard where they both found peace and inspiration. They considered the Vineyard their second home and were respected members of the community. At home, in Norman, one of his proudest accomplishments was co-founding the Norman Youth Soccer League in September 1976, a lasting testament to his love of sport and his heartfelt connection to community.

Bob is survived by his wife of 63 years, Emma; their children, Adelaide and her husband Brian of Gartness, Scotland, and Robert and his wife Stephanie of Denver, Colorado; two grandchildren, Claire and Jack; and brother Don and his wife Betty of Hood River Oregon,

Bob possessed a brilliant mind, a disarming wit, and an empathetic heart. He will be dearly missed.

A private Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Smitty Fausett

A Celebration of Life honoring Alton Smith “Smitty” Fausett, age 86, of Norman, will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, November 14, 2025, in The Chapel of Tribute Memorial Care, 4300 West Indian Hills Road, Norman, Oklahoma.

Smitty was born on Friday, September 1, 1939, in Washington, D.C., the son of Alton and Esther Lucile (Flohr) Fausett. He passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 6, 2025, in his Norman home, surrounded by loved ones.

Smitty was raised by his grandparents—affectionately known to him as “Two Mom” and “Two Dad”—in Little Rock, Arkansas, graduating from Little Rock Central High School in May 1957. He later attended Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, on a football scholarship, graduating in 1961 with a Business Degree.

Smitty began his professional career with Target Corporation as a logistics coordinator in the company’s distribution department. A true entrepreneur at heart, he went on to become an Executive Professional Recruiter before founding his own firm as a Developer in Commercial Real Estate. Over the years, Smitty designed and developed many beautiful structures and business districts that continue to serve their communities—lasting reflections of his creativity, integrity, and vision.

After retiring in 2015, Smitty enjoyed traveling, fine dining, and a glass of Woodbridge. He was united in marriage to Myrna Rainbolt on August 11, 2018, in Norman. Together, they shared many memorable travels—especially Alaskan cruises and trips to Orange Beach, Alabama, two of his favorite destinations.

Smitty cherished time with family and friends, especially “YaYa’s Spaghetti Nights.” Another of his favorite retirement pastimes was spending time swimming with his family. These lazy, fun days were filled with laughter and smiles that brought him pure happiness. His unyielding wit and gift for conversation will be sorely missed.

Smitty was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Linda Fausett; and his beloved grandson, Asher Fausett.

He is survived by his wife, Myrna Fausett, of the home; three children—Bret Fausett, Kelly Ross and her husband Mitchell, and Kristin Fausett Haddock; and his extended family, including Chris Rainbolt, Jeff Rainbolt, and Michael Rainbolt and his wife Melissa.

He is also lovingly remembered by his grandchildren: Eleanor Fausett and Claire Fausett; Courtney Ross Brown and her husband Brady; Mitchell Ross, Jr. and his wife Emmaline; and Sadie Haddock and Emma Haddock. He is further survived by six Rainbolt grandchildren—Brandon Rainbolt and his wife Amanda, Dillon Rainbolt, Brittney Rainbolt, Lillie Rainbolt, and Izzie Rainbolt among them—and one great-granddaughter, Jensen Rainbolt, all of whom held special places in his heart.

Services for Smitty and his family have been placed in the care of Tribute Memorial Care of Norman.

Stephanie Ann Bell

Stephanie Bell, 84, of Norman, Oklahoma, passed away peacefully on November 8, 2025. She was born on February 26, 1941, in Velva, North Dakota, to Sigard and Evelyn Reishus.

Stephanie’s life journey took her through several states, but in 1961 she found her forever home in Norman, where she built a life full of love, laughter, and family. She was a woman of spirit and style, known for her sharp wit, confident presence, and unmistakable high heels — her children often joked that she couldn’t walk without them!

A lifelong lover of movies, Stephanie dreamed of a career in the film industry and spent many hours enjoying the golden age of Hollywood’s classic films. Before moving to Norman she attended The Pasadena Playhouse’s School of Theater Arts. She even named her beloved cat after the industry she so adored — a small but fitting tribute to her creative and playful soul.

Stephanie attended OSU–Oklahoma City, where she earned her nursing assistant degree. Her caring nature and compassion for others made her a natural caregiver, but her proudest and most fulfilling role was as a devoted mother of four. Family was the heartbeat of her life, and her love extended across generations.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Richard Stephen Bell; and her brother, Mark Reishus.

Stephanie is survived by her son, John Bell and his wife Pamela of Norman; daughter, Nicole Bell and her husband Branden Hart of Norman; daughter, Kimberly Bell of Fort Lauderdale, Florida; grandsons, Brandon Bell, Hudson Hart, and Brice Bell; granddaughters, Morgan Bell and her husband Jason Ayala, Alex Coriou and her husband Jonathan, and Emma Nadeau and her husband Gavin; and great-grandchildren, Ben and Beau Coriou, Lillian Coriou, and Eleanor Nadeau.

Stephanie will be remembered for her radiant personality, her love of sunshine and laughter, and her ability to make any gathering brighter. Her family and friends take comfort in knowing that her warmth and light live on through those she loved most.

Jimmy "Jim" Clay Johnson

Jimmy Clay “Jim” Johnson was born October 31, 1944, in San Diego, California to Clay Webster Johnson and Jimmy Marie Meineke Johnson. Jim passed away on November 1, 2025 in Oklahoma City. Services will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, November 10, 2025 at Crosspointe Church of Norman. Interment will follow at Noble IOOF Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 3-5 PM on Sunday, November 9, 2025 at Tribute Memorial Care. Services are entrusted to Tribute Memorial Care.

Although from the panhandle of Texas where he attended West Texas A & M College, his father was stationed in San Diego serving in the United States Navy. After the end of World War II, they returned to Amarillo, Texas and eventually Borger, Texas. He was saved and baptized at Calvary Baptist Church at the age of 12. Jim attended Borger High School where he played football, played baseball, and was a Golden Gloves boxer. Shortly after high school he helped build the Sanford Dam across the Canadian River to form Lake Meredith in the Texas panhandle. It was in Borger that he met his future wife, Judith "Judy" Eileen Cox, who he later married during a blizzard on February 7, 1964. Together they had five children: Steven Clay, Tracy Lynn, Stuart Wayne, Keith Benton, and Christy Eileen.

Jim was a dedicated worker in the oilfield, being introduced to the industry as a roust- about at Panhandle Pipe and Steel in Borger, Texas shortly after he married. Throughout his career, he served in many capacities including rig hand, rough neck, twin truck operator, salesman, regional station manager, district station manager, and eventually business owner. Jim and Judy soon moved to Crane, Texas where he worked for Crane Well Servicing Company. They then returned to Pampa, Texas in the panhandle where he worked nights on the oil rigs as a rough neck. He became involved in the oilfield fracking industry while working for Producers Chemical in Perryton, Texas and quickly specialized, performing fracking jobs with his services being frequently requested by many oil companies. When Producers Chemical Company sold to Cardinal Fracking Service, Jim was promoted to station manager, relocating him and his growing family back to Borger, Texas. Soon came offers of more promotions which required transfer out of state. Not wanting to transfer to Denver, Colorado with Cardinal; Jim took a position as a pumping operator for NOWSCO in Pampa, Texas where he pumped nitrogen under high pressure to fracture rock formations for oil extraction. By this time, the former district managers of Producers Chemical Company started a new company called SERFCO and hired Jim to work as the station manager continuing his work in designing fracking jobs. Because of his well-known work ethic and expertise in the fracking industry, he was eventually hired as the district manager for Dresser Titan in Bryan, Texas. Following the oil flow, he was transferred to Oklahoma City as a fracking specialist salesman. He remained there until the oil bust of the 1980’s. After a brief employment with BJ Titan and then the Western Oil Company of North America, he started his own business in 1987 called Johnson Pipe Supply and Trucking beginning with a single truck. Johnson Pipe Supply and Trucking purchased, pulled, and refurbished gas and oil well casing, tubing, and rods from plugged wells to resell for “down hole” use. His sons often joined him in the pipe yard working after school in high school, between classes during college, and during summers. Judy managed the office including maintaining financial record, invoicing clients, and mapping delivery routes for the business. Using his fleet of five semi-trucks, pipe and other supplies or materials were delivered across the country. Jim continued to operate Johnson Pipe Supply and Trucking until April of 2025.

Jim enjoyed water skiing, camping, fishing, square-dancing, hunting, car restoration, gardening, bowling, watching John Wayne movies, watching Clint Eastwood movies, good ole boy country music, and sports including boxing, football, baseball, softball, basketball, especially when watching his children and grandchildren play. He was a die-hard Dallas Cowboy and OU Sooners fan. He was a devoted father, friend, and husband.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents Clay and Jimmie Marie Meineke Johnson, and his only sister Janet LeAnn Gober, brother-in-law Tim Gober, niece Kasey Gober Deerdoff, and six cousins. He is survived by his wife of 61 years and 9 months Judy Johnson as well as his five children, 15 grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. Children include: Steven and Kelly Hill Johnson of Washington, OK; Tracy and David Grammer of Norman, OK; Stuart and Courtney Roberson Johnson of Dallas, TX; Keith Johnson of Norman, OK; and Christy and Jon Yowell of Coppell, TX. Grandchildren include: Michael and Mackenzie Johnson of Norman, OK; Zachary and Katrina Johnson of Cypress, TX; Jacob and Taylor Johnson of Purcell, OK; Kelsey Johnson of Oklahoma City, OK; Nicholas Johnson Grammer and fiancé McKinely Paratore of Stillwater, OK; Samantha Johnson of Dallas, TX; Ashley Johnson of Dallas, TX; Bailey Johnson of Dallas, TX; Jared Johnson of Dallas, TX; Benton Johnson and fiancé Breanna Miller of Norman, OK; Braydon Johnson of Washington, OK, Emily Yowell of Denton, TX; Natalie Yowell of Coppell, TX; Jonathan Yowell of Coppell, TX; and Elizabeth Yowell of Coppell, TX. Great grandchildren include Calvin, Hudson, and Gracelyn of parents Michael and Mackenize. His fourth great grandchild Westin is expected in December. He is also survived by two nieces Susan and Daniel West of LaPorte, TX as well as Leah and David Grappe of LaPorte, TX and cousins Debbie Meineke Zanada, Radford Meineke, Jr., and Cheri Meineke Johnson.
