Today is Presidents Day, and President George Washington's birthday, but did you know that in 1799, a messenger from Washington's Mt. Vernon Estate arrived in Alexandria to announce that the President had died and they needed a cabinet maker to build a mahogany casket that would fit the more than six-foot-tall president. A young William Demaine assisted with this work, later establishing one of the first funeral homes, Demaine Funeral Home, which exists to this day as part of the Dignity Memorial family.
