💜What Is Alpha-1? Let’s Talk About It! 💜
Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency (often called Alpha-1) is a genetic condition that can affect both the lungs and the liver. It happens when the body doesn’t make enough of a special protein called alpha-1 antitrypsin (AAT) — a natural protector that helps keep the lungs healthy and reduces inflammation.
When there isn’t enough of this protein, the lungs are more vulnerable to damage from things like infections, pollutants, or cigarette smoke. This can lead to:
💨 COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease)
💨 Emphysema
💨 Chronic bronchitis
💨 Asthma-like symptoms that don’t fully improve with treatment
Because AAT is made in the liver, Alpha-1 can also cause:
💛 Liver inflammation or cirrhosis
💛 Elevated liver enzymes
💛 (Less commonly) liver disease in infants or adults
🧬 How Do You Get Alpha-1?
Alpha-1 is inherited, meaning it’s passed down through families. Many people don’t realize they have it — which makes awareness and testing so important.
🩸 Diagnosis Is Simple:
A quick blood test can measure your alpha-1 levels and check for genetic changes. If you have unexplained breathing issues, frequent lung infections, or liver problems, talk with your provider about getting tested for Alpha-1.
💪 There’s Hope — and Treatment!
While there’s no cure, Alpha-1 can be managed with augmentation therapy — IV infusions that replace the missing protein and help protect your lungs.
💙At Vital Care of North Augusta, we proudly provide Alpha-1 infusion treatments in a comfortable, supportive setting. Our experienced infusion team is here to help you breathe easier and live healthier.
Together, we can raise awareness, support one another, and take steps toward better lung and liver health. 💜
