This might not look like much, but I’m very proud of it.

This train of thought will likely be the next three years of my life as I go through the process of bringing this idea to life.

The goal is to study the effects of fascia on skeletal muscular growth and development. To the best of my knowledge, this has never been looked at. We know that fascia has influences on the dispersement of mechanical load during activity. We know that mechanical loading influences the health and development of the fascia. But what we could also be asking is whether or not the state of the fascia directly (or indirectly) affects the growth and development of skeletal muscle through neurological signaling and/or endocrinological factors.

Some info I’ve been going through this week as I research possible reasons for chronic and extreme muscular fatigue, particularly in quadriceps brought on by high-intensity exertion.

For those of you who might have seen the Whiteboard Session last week discussing the effects of exercise on the immune system, these two articles were what I was referring to during that video.

The graphics attached are taken from the first article. The first references the overreaching and overtraining aspects of immunological impact from exercise.

The second graphic shows which immune markers were impacted, how significantly, and what version of training resulted in those changes.
(First article taken from Journal of Applied physiology. The second article is taken from Frontiers in Immunology.)

White Board Session #35 - Effects of Eccentric Variations on Muscle Recovery

What I’ve been reading about are the levels of muscular contractibility that have been measured due to variations in eccentric portions of a lift, and how long it takes the muscle to recover from the damage induced by that variation.
Part of this information is coming from a study posted by

My hope is to be able to take examples like this and use them to generate a way to quantify the various aspects of training. The diversity in training aspects that need to be taken into consideration (and also what information can be gleaned from them) has been overlooked.
I already developed a system of quantification. Information like this, however, helps to refine and increase the level of reliability of that system.

Throughout the years of working with athletes, trying to instill an acceptance of patience in my clients has always been a challenge.

It’s rooted far deeper than just our culture of wanting things instantly. Imagine being one of the strongest, fastest, or most skilled athletes in your area, school, or sport. Then one day, you’re suddenly injured or have a setback that immediately prevents you from being able to compete or train at the same level.

I could tell you that the healing process will take time, which is logical and easy to make sense of. I could tell you that with the right forms of recovery work you will likely get back to where you were in an even shorter timeframe. That can certainly be encouraging and helpful. But both of these require the athletes to accept being patient. This challenges their identity as a athlete and competitor.

However, being patient does not require the athlete to be passive. They have not “stopped” being a competitor. Their training just requires them to make significant adjustments.
We all have areas that we need to work on. We all have things that get overlooked or neglected. Many times, those areas of neglect are what end up leading to the injury/setback in the first place. As busy as an athlete‘s life can be, sometimes having an abrupt stop to their competition, while difficult in the moment, can be a blessing in disguise. It provides an opportunity to address the areas which have been neglected or left unchecked.

The work doesn’t stop just because we are waiting for something or someone else to catch-up with us. We shift our focus to the next task, make new progress there, and keep finding ways to move forward towards the goal.
