In a population-based cohort study, researchers made the connection between a history of neck injury resulting from MVA and the development of troublesome future neck pain. Previous evidence suggested a link between such injuries and future neck pain, but this study aimed to address potential confounding factors. The cohort consisted of 919 randomly selected adults without significant neck pain in September 1995, with follow-up assessments at six and twelve months. After adjusting for known confounders, the study found a positive association between a history of neck injury from motor MVA and the onset of troublesome future neck pain (adjusted Hazard Ratio = 2.14; 95% CI 1.12-4.10). These findings indicate that a neck injury in a traffic accident is a risk factor for experiencing recurrent episodes of troublesome neck pain, highlighting the lasting impact of such injuries and the importance of future treatment following MVA-induced neck injury.
