Substance Use Disorder (SUD) is a chronic medical condition that changes brain chemistry, making it difficult for individuals to control their use of substances — even when it causes harm.
Some commonly misused substances include:
- Prescription opioids (pain medications)
- Benzodiazepines (anxiety/sleep medications)
- Stimulants (ADHD medications, co***ne, methamphetamine)
- Alcohol and other depressants
Understanding the risks and signs of misuse is a critical step in prevention. By raising awareness, supporting early intervention, and encouraging open conversations, we can help reduce the impact of SUD.
As we recognize Substance Use Prevention Month, let’s continue to spread knowledge that empowers healthier choices.
