If you are new to our Rivercity Pilates community, let me introduce myself. I'm Carey Sadler and I opened Rivercity Pilates 16 years ago because I wanted to share my love of Pilates with Iowa. My husband and I had just returned "home" after living out East in the Philadelphia area for about 9 years. We loved our time in the Philly area but we also missed Iowa and missed being close to our family. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Did you know? My college degree was in Chemical Engineering from the University of Iowa. My first job out of college was at ADM in Cedar Rapids. I was the first female engineer they had hired at that location! I learned so much during my years as an engineer..but the thing that stands out to me the most was the experience of learning how to work with people.. I walked into a situation where there weren't many people there that knew what to do with me as their first woman engineer(who was only 21 years old!). But I soon learned that if I connected with the people I was working with by being kind and respectful and worked hard I earned their respect and we could create great working relationships. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Your core is the central part of your body. It includes your pelvis, lower back, hips and stomach. Strong core muscles make it easier to do many activities. When your core muscles are strong, it's easier to swing a golf club, get a glass from the top shelf and bend down to tie your shoes.

Weak core muscles can leave you more prone to poor posture, lower back pain and muscle injuries. Strengthening your core muscles may help back pain get better and lower the risk of falls.

Many people think of their core as just their abdominal muscles, but it's important to remember to work your lower back and glutes as well! The Pilates swimming exercise strengthens the muscles on the back of your body: the butt, the thighs, and the back muscles!

Do you remember when you learned to swim? How many lessons/classes did you take before you learned things like diving into the deep end or a specialty stroke like the breast stroke or the butterfly?

The Pilates Cadillac is very similar to the Pilates Tower Systems in the studio, but it does have some extra benefits! The Cadillac has a set of parallel bars that run across the top of the equipment that allow you to do a variety of exercises while holding or even hanging from the bars. These exercises can be great for building strength and mobility in the shoulders.
