12 years ago, I underwent my first L5-S1 Discectomy. During that time, I had very limited knowledge on becoming modified independent during my recovery. Lucky enough, my mother made herself available to care for me. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Fast forward to my second trimester of pregnancy, I noticed the burning returning down my leg. This time the familiar debilitating pain would be going down the back of my left leg. I immediately knew what it was and knew I would need surgery again if I wanted to remain modified independent for my daughter’s sake. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
This time I was prepared with my handheld shower chair, shower bench, and even a 4Wheel walker for when my stomach started to really grow and I still had to make my way to my kitchen and bathroom. I even used electric wheelchairs for my shopping. But as I recovered slowly, it was these three items that helped me roll my way to kitchen, the cane to help me enjoy being outside with my daughter and the reacher so I could pick up toys during the 3 months of No BLT (No bending, lifting or twisting). >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
With the help of others and my knowledge in back pain, sports medicine, physical therapy and most importantly pelvic floor rehab, I have returned to being able to lift over 50 lbs and run.
