Discussing your decision to separate/divorce with your children can be one of the most difficult conversations to have.
Here are some additional tips for speaking to your children about divorce:
BE ON THE SAME PAGE
Hearing from both parents shows dedication, unity, creates less confusion, and decreases the need for a child to choose sides. (Examples: "Both mom and dad decided,")
DO NOT BLAME
Blame results in resentment, children feeling like they need to choose sides, and a need for loyalty or betrayal. Note: The harsh truth is less important than reassurance, support, and unity.
DEFINE "SEPARATION" and/or "DIVORCE"
Explaining the meaning of separation and/or divorce in an age-appropriate manner helps to clarify and provides predictability. (Example: Time apart, a break, or living separately)
PROVIDE CONSISTENCY AND PREDICTABILITY
Children are incredibly resilient and thrive with consistency and predictability. Describing the things that will stay the same, as well as the things that will change can provide predictability and decrease anxiety.
VALIDATE A CHILD’S CONCERNS AND FEELINGS
By recognizing and validating a child’s feelings and concerns you send the message that their feelings matter, and are heard, understood, and accepted.
PLAN A FOLLOW UP
Check in with children a little later. Give the kids time to process information.

Using Behavior Modification Charts for Children
Behavior Modification Charts, also known as Behavior Charts, can be a very useful tool for parents and teachers to help children increase desired behaviors (e.g., getting dressed in the morning for school or helping set or clear the table for dinner) or to correct a specific behavioral problem (such as not listening, defiance, whining, or not doing homework). These charts provide an opportunity for parents to recognize and reinforce accomplishments.
Behavior Charts can also be used to provide children with a daily incentive to work on different specific behaviors (such as doing homework on Monday; remembering to take out the garbage and working on listening to the teacher and mom and dad on Tuesday; and so on).

Thank you for your interest! My name is Dr. Mauricio Richard Taborga, Psy.D., LMHC, NCC. I am a bilingual licensed psychotherapist, with over 9 years of experience, and I specialize in the treatment of individuals across the life span, couples, and families experiencing a wide-range of difficulties. My passionate, friendly and patient approach is aimed at developing a therapeutic relationship with my clients that will inspire hope, help them recognize their strengths and to develop the insight and skills to navigate life's challenges. With an understanding and appreciation for the uniqueness of each individual, I recognize that no single approach is right for everyone and strives to integrate a variety of therapeutic orientations and interventions in understanding and helping my clients.
My experience and training includes approaches based in Cognitive-Behavioral Therapies (CBT); Mindfulness, and Acceptance and Commitment interventions; Psychodynamic, Solution-Focused; Reality Therapy; Family Systems; Behavioral Interventions and Play Therapies. These approaches provide the basis for helping clients to bring the unconscious scripts into conscious awareness, understand the influence of unhealthy thinking on distressful emotions and behaviors, and the development of insight and change that will produce joy, fulfillment, and love in my client’s lives and relationships.
Work With Adults
The courageous decision to attend therapy can be a scary and overwhelming experience. I consider it an honor to have a client allow me to join them during a difficult moment in their journey through life. My approach is collaborative and consists of respecting each person’s unique history, personality, cultural characteristics and strengths. For me, the most important aspect of therapy is the relationship between the client and therapist. So, I urge clients to search until they find a therapist that they feel is authentic, respectful, compassionate and knowledgeable. These qualities create a safe and nurturing environment where the client may have the opportunity to develop increased self-awareness, meaning and a deeper connection to all aspects of his or her life.
Work With Children and Families
My early work focused on the treatment of children suffering from various behavioral difficulties, trauma, depressions and anxieties in Partial-Hospitalization and outpatient settings through group, individual and family therapies. Throughout my career, my passion for working with children and families has led me to develop my skills in this area and share my knowledge through various workshops. My approach is comprehensive, involving all family members at different phases of treatment. During individual sessions with children, I strive to create a warm and nurturing environment for children to develop the skills to manage distressful emotions and self-control techniques through play, art, stories and the unique individual strengths that each child possesses. Meetings with parents are psychoeducational and focus on further developing parenting skills, empowering parents and transferring skills into the home. Finally, family sessions are a chance to practice skills in session with support and coaching from me or by having me model parenting skills discussed.
