Cherry Grove Drug, a new independent full-service pharmacy in North Myrtle Beach, opened its doors on Monday, January 15, 2018. Sole Owner and Pharmacist in Charge, Jenna Dukes, saw her lifelong dream come true as her pharmacy doors swung open for the first time at 9:00 am on Monday morning.
“I have dreamed of this opportunity to open my own pharmacy for many years now. After working with a national retail pharmacy for over 10 years, I completely understand the frustrations and hostility that many customers harbor towards the big chain drug stores. For many years I felt like my hands were tied and I could not provide the level of pharmaceutical care that my customers really needed. Now, with the opening of Cherry Grove Drug, I will able to provide uncompromised and unparalleled care to my pharmacy customers.” - Jenna L. Dukes
Jenna Lynne Dukes, Pharm D and resident of North Myrtle Beach, grew up in the small rural town of Gilbert, West Virginia. Her dream of owning and operating an independent pharmacy started at an early age and continued through her adolescence, time at West Virginia University School of Pharmacy and her working career with one of the largest retail-chain pharmacies in the U.S. Growing up in the coalfields of southern West Virginia, “independent pharmacy” is the only pharmacy that Jenna ever knew. It was not uncommon for each of these small West Virginia towns to include multiple independent pharmacies bearing the name of that particular municipality or the name of its owner. The customer service, personalized care, and relaxed atmosphere of these independent pharmacies made a lasting impact on Jenna. After spending almost a decade working for Walgreen’s Pharmacy in North Myrtle Beach, Jenna realized that she was not able to extend the personalized care and attention to her customers on the other side of the counter. Her customers voiced their apprehensions, frustrations, and concerns with the national retail pharmacy system. Jenna listened to these concerns for years and finally heeded the advice of friends, family, and customers to open her own pharmacy.
“The last ten years behind the counter have taught me many things about the pharmacy business and the need for an independent in North Myrtle Beach,” says Dukes. Her desire to extend personalized pharmaceutical care to the residents along the Grand Strand is supported by not only her existing customer and physician relationships, but also by the influx of retirees into this coastal market. “Demographic and real estate statistics show a continued influx of full time residents into this city along with an average age that supports the need for specialized pharmacy care,” proclaims Dukes. The natural/geographic appeal of the Grand Strand along with the promise of personalized medical and pharmaceutical care will prove to be a recipe for success for Cherry Grove Drug.
