The week is almost over and most of us are feeling run down. Take some time for yourself...seriously!

Simple stretching exercises can help reduce fatigue. It is easy to do and can be done right where you are currently sitting!

*Stretching increases blood supply and nutrients to joint structures and soft tissues.

*Stretching increases soft tissue temperature and allows for greater elasticity of tissues.

*Stretching increases joint synovial fluid (lubricant for bones and articular cartilage) that allows greater range of motion and reduces joint degeneration.

*Stretching increases a joint’s ability to move through a greater range of motion with less energy required to do so.

*Stretching decreases tightness and resistance in tendons and muscles.

Every year in the second week of July, National Therapeutic Recreation Week is celebrated in the US. It began in 1984, started by the National Therapeutic Recreation Society to help highlight the significance of engaging in activities that aid in the recovery of various forms of disabilities.

Recreational therapy is a prescribed recreation, or other activity used as a treatment intervention provided by a trained and certified healthcare professional. Examples of therapeutic recreation include adapted sports, pet therapy, expressive arts like creative writing, painting, and drawing. Progressive muscle relations, horticulture, or therapist outings designed for reintegration into community.

Therapist work with patients of all ages suffering from different debilitating conditions. Therapeutic recreation is extremely beneficial as it increases self-confidence, physical strength and improves overall frame of mind.

Exercise and recreation benefits everyone, no matter what your age. And exercise doesn’t have to be expensive or time-consuming. You can drastically improve your health with something as simple as walking each day.

Summertime is here! Now’s the time you can get outside, enjoy nice weather and soak up some sun. But, like with any good thing, too much sunshine can actually hurt your body. That’s because the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays contain radiation that can lead to serious health issues, including cancer.

July is UV Safety Awareness Month, making it the perfect time to learn how to protect yourself from UV exposure. People of all skin colors are potentially at risk for sunburn and other harmful effects of UV radiation, so always protect yourself. Be especially careful if you have:

-pale skin
-blond, red, or light brown hair
-been treated for skin cancer
-a family member who has had skin cancer

Here are some general sunscreen and exposure tips to keep you safer this season:

-Choose a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher

-Apply enough sunscreen to evenly cover all
areas of the skin that will be exposed to the sun

-Plan to apply sunscreen 15 to 30 minutes before going outside

-Cover up during long periods of direct exposure

-Always keep hats and sunglasses handy

High temperatures kill hundreds of people every year. Heat-related deaths and illness are preventable, yet more than 700 people die from extreme heat every year in the United States.

Take measures to stay cool, remain hydrated, and keep informed. Getting too hot can make you sick. You can become ill from the heat if your body can’t compensate for it and properly cool you off. The main things affecting your body’s ability to cool itself during extremely hot weather are:

*High humidity. When the humidity is high, sweat won’t evaporate as quickly. This keeps your body from releasing heat as fast as it may need to.

*Personal factors. Age, obesity, fever, dehydration, heart disease, mental illness, poor circulation, sunburn, and prescription drug and alcohol use all can play a role in whether a person can cool off enough in very hot weather.

Those who are at highest risk include people 65 and older, children younger than two, and people with chronic diseases or mental illness.

Closely monitor people who depend on you for their care and ask these questions:

Are they drinking enough water?
Do they have access to air conditioning?
Do they need help keeping cool?

June is National Safety Month. While everyone should be practicing safe habits every day of the year, it can’t hurt for seniors to review some measures they can take for additional peace of mind. As you get older, the things you may have thought weren’t risky become a little more dangerous. From slipping and falling to changes in the weather, these factors can sometimes fatal for seniors. It’s important to prepare for these instances or make sure they are properly addressed.

* Linoleum, tile and hardwood floors can be slippery for seniors and cause them to fall. Carpeted floors provide a safer surface for seniors at home.
* Slipping and falling is a common occurrence in rooms such as the bathroom, so consider installing handrails and chairs in the shower and other bathroom areas.
* Ensure the ramps you use are secure, have handrails and are well-lit.
* Dehydration can be a serious threat to seniors, so try not to over-indulge on alcohol and caffeinated drinks. While the amount of water you should drink varies by person and situation, if you’re thirsty or experiencing a headache, that’s a good sign to take a sip. Be sure to drink plenty of water, especially when summer rolls around later this month.

Older Americans Month is an annual event dating back to 1963, when President John F. Kennedy designated May as Senior Citizens Month. It was later renamed Older Americans Month, honoring older Americans and celebrating their contributions to our communities and our nation.

The Administration for Community Living has announced that the theme for Older Americans Month 2022 is “Age My Way.” This special recognition provides an opportunity for all of us to explore the many ways older adults can remain in and be involved with their communities.

Here at TheraHealth & Wellness, we strive to keep seniors in their home, keep them safe, and keep them moving to better health! If you have a senior family member that could use more independence to maintain an active life, we are here to help. We provide in home therapy, individualized plans for care, as well as in home safety assessments to reduce your loved one's risk for fall. All these measures can keep your loved one living a life of independence that they deserve!

National Doctors Day honors the professionals for their dedication and contributions to society and the community. Their dedication puts the patient first time and again. On National Doctors Day, we say “thank you” to our physicians for all that they do for us and our loved ones.

Healthcare today is more complex than ever. With more advancements, tools, and information at their fingertips, doctors have an overwhelming job to diagnose and treat their patients every day. This is the day to honor the ones who see us 365 days a year. In every city and hospital, in our military, and in our rural communities, doctors pave the way to better healthcare for their patients.
