It's time to introduce our fantastic lineup of keynote speakers for ! 👏
The 60th Harry G. Armstrong Lecture will be held on Thursday, May 21, from 8:00-9:30 am. We are very pleased to be welcoming Drs. Kai Staats and Bindhu Oommen, who will consecutively present about their work at University of Arizona, Biosphere 2.
KAI STAATS, PH.D.
"Dr. Staats will provide an overview of the Space Analog for the Moon & Mars (SAM) at the University of Arizona, Biosphere 2. This world-class research facility is a hermetically sealed and pressurized terrestrial habitat that helps us prepare for living on other worlds, such as the Moon or Mars. 30 individuals have been sealed inside of SAM over the past two years, with one to four crew members at a time. SAM incorporates hydroponics, crew quarters, airlock, use of functional pressure suits, and a reduced gravity simulator for EVAs in the geologically accurate Mars yard. Two core research objectives at SAM are bioregeneration, or plant-based life support systems, and the challenge of complex medical procedures when the crew are several days, or several months, from Earth.
This presentation will lay the foundation for the subsequent talk by Bindhu Oommen, M.D., project lead for the SAM MedBay."
BINDHU OOMMEN, M.D.
"Dr. Bindhu Oommen will discuss how invasive medical procedures conducted in deep space (anything beyond Earth orbit) will require a significant investment in total capacity for that remote medical and surgical bay, as a function of distance from Earth, severity of the injury or disease, capability of the equipment and team, and sustainability of practice within the context of a life support system and the environment."
