Chronic sleep deprivation is more dangerous than you may realize.

Sleep is not simply a time when the brain shuts down. It is when critical maintenance begins.During sleep, the brain clears metabolic waste, restores energy balance, and supports the connections that allow memory and learning to function properly.Chronic sleep deprivation disrupts these processes and has been associated with measurable changes in brain structure over time.Protecting your sleep is one of the most powerful steps you can take for long-term brain health. How many hours of sleep do you typically get each night?

Autoimmune Awareness Month đź’™
If you’ve been navigating an autoimmune condition, you know how complex and frustrating it can feel.

Here are a few things that come up often, but don’t always get talked about:
🧬 Autoimmune conditions happen when the immune system begins reacting to the body’s own tissues
🧩 There isn’t always a single cause. It’s often a mix of genetics, environment, and what’s happening inside the body
📊 Around 50 million people in the U.S. are living with an autoimmune condition
đź‘© Women are disproportionately affected, making up about 80% of cases
➕ It’s common for more than one autoimmune condition to be present
⏳ Many people spend years searching for answers before receiving a diagnosis

For many, the hardest part goes beyond the symptoms. It’s feeling dismissed, unheard, or told everything looks “normal” when it doesn’t feel that way.

If that’s been your experience, you’re not alone.

Care begins with listening. From there, we Riordan Clinictake the time to understand what may be contributing to what you’re experiencing and how to support your next steps.

If you’re still searching for answers, you can learn more at riordanclinic.org

Despite decades of research and billions of dollars invested, we still lack truly effective treatments for many devastating neurodegenerative diseases.

Conditions like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's continue to rise, and most current therapies focus primarily on managing symptoms rather than addressing the underlying drivers of disease.

Prevention is up to you and your daily choices.

Chronic inflammation (the slow, sustained activation of the immune system that drives heart disease, cognitive decline, type 2 diabetes, cancer, and accelerated aging) is not a one-way door.

Research tracking inflammatory biomarkers in people switching to whole-food, plant-based diets has found measurable drops in key markers within days to weeks.

C-reactive protein. Interleukin-6. TNF-alpha. The chemical signals of a body under siege begin to quiet when the siege conditions are removed.

Fiber feeds the gut bacteria that produce short-chain fatty acids, which reduce intestinal permeability and systemic inflammation. Polyphenols in berries, greens, and legumes directly suppress inflammatory pathways. The absence of saturated fat reduces the oxidative burden on blood vessel walls.

You do not have to wait years to feel the difference. Many patients describe changes in energy, sleep quality, and joint pain within the first week.

The body is not waiting for you to earn your way back to health. It starts working with you the moment you start working with it.

One meal is not a cure. But one meal in the right direction is already a message: the conditions are changing.

And the body listens.

“Brain rot” is the phrase people are using to describe what excessive screen time feels like.

It’s not a medical term. But the experience behind it is increasingly being studied.

In a randomized controlled trial of 467 adults, researchers asked participants to block mobile internet access on their smartphones for two weeks. They could still text and make calls, but no browsing, no social media, no app-based feeds.

They found that 91% of participants improved on at least one measure of sustained attention, mental health, or overall well-being. Attention improved to a degree comparable to reversing roughly a decade of typical age-related decline. 🧠

When the constant pull of mobile internet is reduced, cognitive and emotional systems recalibrate.

The brain adapts to what it repeatedly experiences. That adaptability is not a weakness. It’s neuroplasticity.

And it works in both directions.

Low-dose naltrexone (LDN) is gaining interest as researchers explore its potential to support individuals living with chronic pain, inflammation, and immune-related conditions. Unlike traditional pain medications, LDN appears to work through unique pathways in both the nervous and immune systems.

Current studies are evaluating how LDN may:
• Briefly block opioid receptors to encourage natural endorphin production
• Interact with receptors involved in pain and immune responses
• Influence microglial cells in the brain to help reduce neuroinflammation

These effects suggest that LDN may represent a new class of therapies focused on central immune modulation, offering potential support for conditions such as fibromyalgia and other chronic pain disorders.

If you’re curious about LDN, speak with your healthcare provider. Compounding pharmacies prepare LDN in customized low doses and forms based on prescriber direction.

Chronic inflammation does not announce itself loudly. It builds quietly over time, influencing how the brain ages long before symptoms appear.

From a neurological perspective, ongoing inflammatory signaling interferes with communication between neurons, disrupts energy production, and accelerates structural and functional changes associated with cognitive decline. This is why inflammation is now recognized as a central driver of brain aging rather than a secondary concern.

The encouraging news is that inflammation is not inevitable. Daily choices around sleep, nutrition, movement, stress regulation, and environmental exposures all influence the inflammatory tone of the brain.

Protecting your cognitive health begins with addressing the signals that quietly shape it over decades.
