Do we have to have an obituary in the newspaper?

The short answer is no. You are not required to publish an obituary in a newspaper. This is an additional option if you would like to reach more people with service details however, if you don’t think many of your friends read the paper, you do not have to publish the obituary in the paper.

An alternative is publishing an obituary via social media. Thelen Funeral Services lists all of our obituaries for free on our website. These obituaries can be shared by the family via Facebook or other social media outlets.
