Some chemicals are permitted in the United States but banned in Europe due to health concerns. These include:
Potassium bromate: Used to make baked goods whiter and increase volume, but banned in Europe due to concerns that it may be a carcinogen
Azodicarbonamide: Used to bleach flour, but banned in Europe
Titanium dioxide: Also known as E171, but banned in Europe
Brominated vegetable oil: Also known as E443, but banned in Europe
Propylparaben: Also known as E217, but banned in Europe
Preservatives
BHA and BHT are flavor enhancers and preservatives that are banned in Europe but widely used in the United States
Coloring agents
The EU sets maximum limits for four heavy metal contaminants in almost all color additives, but the US does not regulate the content of cadmium
