Highlighting Acupuncturist and Herbalist Emma Rengel
Emma Rengel, DAc, M.Ed., Lic. Ac., Dipl. OM, received her Master of Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine and Doctorate of Acupuncture from the New England School of Acupuncture (NESA) at Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (MCPHS). She is a nationally certified Diplomate of Oriental Medicine by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM) and is a licensed acupuncturist and herbalist in New Hampshire and Massachusetts. During her education, she completed internships at the New England School of Acupuncture Treatment Center, Boston Medical Center, and the Edith Nourse Rogers Memorial Veterans’ Hospital. In addition to her education at NESA, Emma has completed the Fundamentals of Oncology Acupuncture Course through Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Before coming to Tai Chi Acupuncture and Wellness Center Emma was a full-time acupuncturist at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover, NH. She treated patients in their outpatient clinic as well as at the Mass General Brigham Cancer Center.

Her favorite adventures have been hiking in the Swiss Alps and teaching English in Vietnam. Her experience in Vietnam inspired her to complete a Master of Education degree. Emma’s path to becoming an acupuncturist began while she was an ESL teacher. When classes went remote during the COVID pandemic, Emma began taking online yoga classes and completed a yoga teacher training. During this time, she was introduced to reiki energy healing and became a reiki master. Emma saw healing as a way of life. Her experiences with yoga and reiki led Emma to think about shifting her career to work in a more meaningful way with healing. She found acupuncture to be a perfect fit for her.

A good Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) recipe for November, which is the transition from late autumn to early winter, is Warm Pears with Ginger and Walnuts.
This recipe helps counteract the dryness of the season, soothe the lungs, and support the kidneys with warming, nourishing ingredients.
Warm Pears with Ginger and Walnuts (TCM-inspired)
This dish combines moistening pears with warming ginger to help with common autumn/winter complaints like dry coughs or a scratchy throat.
Ingredients
2-4 Asian or regular pears (peeled, cored, and quartered or halved)
3-4 slices of fresh, peeled ginger
2 cups water (or enough to cover the pears in a small pot)
1-2 tsp raw honey, maple syrup, or molasses per pear, to taste
A handful of walnuts
1 tbsp black sesame seeds (optional, for kidney support)
Instructions
Combine the pears, ginger slices, and water in a small pot.
Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and simmer for about 15-20 minutes, or until the pears are soft.
Remove from heat. Stir in your choice of sweetener.
Serve the warm pears in a bowl. Top with walnuts and black sesame seeds before eating.
TCM Benefits for November
Pears: Moistening properties counteract the autumn dryness, soothe the throat, and nourish Lung Yin.
Ginger: A warming spice that improves circulation, aids digestion, and helps ward off colds.
Walnuts and Black Sesame Seeds: These nuts and seeds nourish the Kidneys, an organ associated with the upcoming winter season, and help promote longevity and healthy skin.
Warm Preparation: Cooking foods longer and at warmer temperatures (like simmering a stew or soup) is recommended in November to provide internal warmth and support digestion as the weather gets colder.

Highlighting Acupuncturist and Herbalist Joseph Zhang
Joseph comes from a multigenerational family of Chinese medicine practitioners, growing up in China until the age of 16 allowed him to read, understand, and utilize knowledge from ancient Chinese medical books, along with valuable experiences passed down by his family, he often finds unique approach when faced with tricky health conditions.

Joseph graduated from the New York College of Traditional Chinese Medicine with a master's degree in acupuncture, along with the completion of a Chinese herb program. He has also completed a postgraduate mentorship program at Hunan Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, where he learned from some of the best acupuncturists and TCM practitioners in China. Having worked in multiple busy clinics across New York City with busy patient flow, he has helped thousands of patients with various health issues and received phenomenal feedback.

He utilizes many different styles of acupuncture techniques including five-element acupuncture, Master Tung's acupuncture, and auricular acupuncture points. He believes in targeting the root cause of a disorder and restoring the body to its natural balance.

Joseph specializes in pain management, mood issues, digestive disorders, ear and vision problems, male and female infertility, and a variety of other miscellaneous health concerns.

Why Do People Try Acupuncture
While acupuncture is widely known to relieve pain, it is also helpful for many conditions in which pain is not primary, including a wide variety of chronic conditions. It can be used for almost any physical or emotional problem, or simply the desire to stay well. People from all walks of life use acupuncture for many different reasons. People who might particularly benefit include those:

With chronic pain or other symptoms not responding to traditional treatment
For whom there are limited medical interventions, as with acute viral infections, nutritional and metabolic disorders, chronic degenerative diseases, allergies and auto-immune diseases, arthritis, hypertension, psychosomatic diseases and certain mental conditions, such as depression or anxiety.
Who feel as if something is “wrong” even though tests are inconclusive
Whose symptoms seem to be associated with or worsened by stress (asthma, migraines, etc.)

In this series we will learn/ use breathwork practices, gentle movement and meditation to release physical tension, settle the nervous system and focus the mind.

You will learn how to practice several breath work (pranayama) techniques and learn the benefits behind these practices.

Class will start with a breath practice to cultivate energy in the body and calm the mind. We will then move through a gentle movements to circulate that energy throughout the body and get ready for stillness. The final portion of the class is dedicated to a quieting meditation and an extended savasana with essential oils.

This workshop would be accessible to those who have limited mobility.

Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese medical practice that involves inserting needles into specific points on the body.
Development
Acupuncture was practiced alongside massage, diet, and herbs.
Bronze statues with acupuncture points were used for examination and teaching in the 15th century.
Acupuncture needles were originally made of sharpened stones and long sharp bones.
Acupuncture needles used in ancient times were much thicker than modern needles and often resulted in infection.

There is a health crisis in this country and it is type 2 diabetes and obesity. It affects not only adults but more and more children are diagnosed with obesity. That extra weight increases the risks for heart disease and stroke but also certain cancers. Type 2 diabetes is a preventable disease and if we make the right choices we can avoid it, and so do our children.
The key to weight loss: blood sugar control.

How many treatments will it take to get better?
This will mainly depend on your case, whether or not it is chronic or acute, and your overall health condition. It is difficult to give a specific number of treatments required; however, in general most people experience positive results after a series of 3 – 6 weekly treatments. Some patients may see results within the first few treatments, while others may require a longer series of treatments. Usually, after the first three treatments, we will re-evaluate your condition and try to give you an estimate of how many more treatments you might need. Alternatively, we might possibly make a referral to other professions for a better result.
