This Black History Month, we are honored to celebrate living history right here at Morada Meadow Lakes — through the incredible life and memories of Ms. Bernice.
When asked who she most admires, Ms. Bernice shared that she would choose Mae Jemison — the first Black woman astronaut. During that time, Ms. Bernice was working in the Chicago Public School system and personally knew Dr. Jemison. She knew world champion Muhammad Ali, who would visit the Black college she attended — Southern University. She lived in Chicago during the time Martin Luther King Jr. marched on the west side, standing for justice even in the face of violence, never losing faith that America would one day see equality.
For Ms. Bernice, Black History Month isn’t just about stories in books — it’s about people she met, moments she witnessed, and the pride she carries for the contributions Black Americans have made to this country and the world.
Her memories are treasures. Her perspective is history. And her legacy continues to inspire us all.
