Talking, Reading and Singing are so important to your child’s Speech Development!
When talking let your child see your mouth as you talk! Use objects/animals to support your child’s understanding!
Be animated when reading to your child! Model pointing to pictures by saying LOOK as you POINT!!
Singing helps your child learn new vocabulary! I love the SUPER SIMPLE SONGS to encourage motor and verbal imitation!

Does your child gag or throw up because of textures? The Nuk Brush could be a tool you may have!!
Many SLPs give a parent to a parent to use with their child!
This brush helps to increase oral awareness and can be used to de-sensitize the gag reflex. Here are some tips:
*Rubbing this device a round the mouth, on the cheeks, gums and tongue can improve oral motor skills.
*Dip the Nuk Brush in new foods to encourage your child to try new foods.
*Young children LOVE to chew on the Nuk Brush.
* I like to place Nuk in middle of tongue and move it toward tip of tongue to increase tongue retraction.
*Place the Nuk inside the child’s cheek and ask them to touch it with their tongue which will increase tongue lateralization.

Many young children love to hold on to their NuK Brush!
Your Speech Pathologist can demonstrate more exercises to improve your child’s feeding skills.

Teaching your child to use a straw can be challenging with some toddle. Most toddlers can learn to use a straw beginning a 9 month.
I suggest purchasing a Honey Bear bottle from Talktools.com or
arktherapurtic.com. The following are steps to follow:
1. Put liquid in the bottle then give an extra squeeze. The liquid straws at the top of the straw so only so amount comes out which allows the child to take a sip. This makes drinking easier for children with poor oral motor skills or weak suck. This bottle helps the child to understand that they need to suck to drink.
2. When the child is ready, squeeze only partially up the straw. If the liquid is not at top of straw, the child will learn to suck to get liquid.
3. Once the child becomes comfortable drinking the liquid with minimal squeezing . Keep repeating this step.
4. Continue using this bottle until the child can suck the liquid all the way up the bottle.
5. Next you can begin trying different straw cups for straw drinking.
6. You can increase the difficulty by trying milkshakes and smoothies.
Kids LOVE smoothies. Thicker liquids require increase using more tongue retractions.

If your child’s vocabulary is below what is expected for their age, the following strategies can be implemented to increase vocabulary!
*Narrate throughout your child’s day about what your child is doing;
* Have play dates with older children as children learn to say words from their peers.
*Explore your child’s surrounds like going to park or zoo.
*Sing Songs: My favorite app is pink fong.
*Read books routinely every day and model words as you and your child point to pictures.Books with simple pictures are great for toddlers.
*Use sensory words like how something feels(soft, hard, rough, hard), smells(yummy, stinky), sounds heard(sirens, birds, animal sounds).
* PLAY the POINTING Game- you and your child can take turns pointing to pictures or real objects and name the pictures/objects.

How do children move from using single words to 2 word phrases?
A Great Question?? Let’s talk about some of the prerequisites skills your child needs!

Your child will need to know at least 35 to 50 words before they can effectively start combining them into phrases.
The vocabulary of your child needs to include nouns, pronouns, verbs and adjectives(describing words). It should also include social words “hi” “Bye”, requesting words like “please” and “more”, action words like “eat”, “sleep”, “go”, early pronouns like “me”, “mine””my”, prepositions like “in”, “on” “out”, negation words like “no” “can’t”, and describing words like “big”, “fast”, “yucky”.

While children may imitate two phrases they hear before they have a vocabulary of 35-50 words, I want to stress the importance of continuing to increase your child’s vocabulary.
Moving to phrases too early, can lead to difficulty understanding and processing language.

This week I will be focusing on moving from individual words to phrases!

It can be EXCITING when your child starts saying words. Hearing Mom, Dad, hi, bye and more for the first time excites all of us parents. Of course, some of us expect it to be a smooth transition form saying words to phrases. If your child can say one word, they will definitely be able to say more!
Unfortunately, sometimes it takes time and using strategies recommended by a Speech Pathologist. We need to be patient and lay the groundwork for our children to built up to phrases. We must remember that if your child’s vocabulary is limited, they need guidance and support to combine words into phrases.
This week we will talk about how to lay that groundwork. I’m excited to join you on the journey from single words to phrases!
