We hear so much about inflammation but what is it and how does it effect our bodies?
Inflammation is the body's normal and necessary protective response to injury, infection or irritants.
It's the body's mechanism to heal itself and fight off threats.
It signals the immune system to address the problem.
It activates the cells, blood vessels and molecular mediators to get to work.
Short term inflammation is a healthy process.
For example a fever during an infection or swelling after sprain.
Long term inflammation can damage healthy cells and organs.
It is also a factor in many diseases like diabetes, arthritis and some types of cancers.
When the body detects a problem it starts the inflammation process.
It sends immune cells to area.
Blood flow increases causing area to become red and warm as the blood vessels dilate.
Fluid and cells leak through walls into tissues causing swelling. This pressure is what causes the pain.
Acute is known as short term responce that is resolved once problem is fixed.
Chronic inflammation can be very harmful. It results from persistent infections, auto immune disorders where the immune system attacts the bodies own tissues, or lifestyle factors like stress, poor diet or lack of activity.
Over time chronic inflammation leads to increased disease risk, tissue damage, auto immune diseases and mental health effects like mood disorders, depression and anxiety.
There are ways to reduce inflammation in your body.
You can adopt an anti inflammatory diet, prioritize regular to moderate exercise, make sure to get adequate sleep, manage stress and limit smoking and excessive alcohol use.
Reducing inflammation helps to keep our immune system refreshed and strong and able to heal and fight off disease risk.
Each person's system is a little different so first thing to do is learn what's best for you and do what you can to avoid things that trigger inflammation for you.
