The placenta is composed of beneficial hormones, chemicals, iron, and proteins. These healing substances include:

Estrogen, Progesterone, Testosterone: Contributes to mammary gland development in preparation for lactation; stabilizes postpartum mood; regulates post-birth uterine cramping; decreases depression; normalizes and stimulates libido. Prolactin: Promotes lactation; increases milk supply; enhances the mothering instinct. Oxytocin: Decreases pain and increases bonding in mother and infant; counteracts the production of stress hormones such as Cortisol; greatly reduces postpartum bleeding; enhances the breastfeeding let-down reflex. Placental Opioid-Enhancing Factor (POEF): Stimulates the production of your bodyโ€™s natural opioids, including endorphins; reduces pain; increases well-being. Thyroid Stimulating Hormone: Regulates the thyroid gland; boosts energy and supports recovery from stressful events. Corticotropin Releasing Hormone (CRH): Low levels of CRH are implicated in postpartum depression. Cortisone: Reduces inflammation and swelling; promotes healing. Interferon: Triggers the protective defenses of the immune system to fight infection. Prostaglandins: Regulates contractions in the uterus after birth; helps uterus return to its pre-pregnancy size. Anti-inflammatory effects. Iron: Replenishes maternal iron stores to combat anemia, a common postpartum condition. Increases energy; decreases fatigue and depression. Hemoglobin: Oxygen-carrying molecule which provides a boost in energy. Urokinase Inhibiting Factor and Factor XIII: stops bleeding and enhances wound healing. Immunoglobulin G (IgG): Antibody molecules which support the immune system. Human Placental Lactogen (hPL): This hormone has lactogenic and growth-promoting properties; promotes mammary gland growth in preparation for lactation in the mother. It also regulates maternal glucose, protein, and fat levels.

The Birth Story: This mama absolutely rocked her second homebirth, it was an honor to be invited to capture it, witness this family grow as they met their final addition, and work alongside Corinne and Shelli.

You did it, mama!

โ€œDating pregnancy is not an exact science and there is considerable variation between women.

It is normal that some women naturally have longer pregnancies than others.

The idea that something terrible will happen if a woman remains pregnant for a moment longer than 42 weeks just isnโ€™t true.

The baby doesnโ€™t turn into a pumpkin at midnight.โ€

Itโ€™s so important that women have full information and are able to look at the pros and cons of different courses of action before making the decisions that are right for them.

Part of that is sorting the myths from the facts.

This quote is from my book, โ€œInducing Labour: making informed decisions."

After she changed positions - it didnโ€™t take long for her to feel pushy. Just a short minute later, she roared her baby out and into the world. It was incredible!! โœจโ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹

A little late to post but I was able to serve this amazing family again! Lots of prayer, emotion and love (a great doctor and a clear drape)! Welcome, baby!

Grandmother breastfeeding her grandchild. It is a common practice in many cultures for a grandmother to relactate so that she may breastfeed her grandchild. It is truly an act of love.

A lot of people seem to be curious about how this is possible. Breastmilk production is all about supply and demand. The breasts can continue to make milk indefinitely as long as there is a demand for it.

People also seem to be curious about how menopause might affect this. Pituitary glands are necessary in the production of breastmilk and menopause does not restrict the pituitary glands ability to function.

So, yes, even after menopause it is still possible to produce enough milk to nourish a baby.

Loving all of the conversation around this?! Aren't women's bodies just amazing?

We can do so many things that we didn't even know ๐Ÿ˜‰
