Practice Intentional Self-Care doing the Christmas Holiday

During the holidays, it’s easy to pour from an empty cup while trying to meet expectations. Practicing intentional self-care means slowing down and listening to what your body and mind truly need. Rest when you’re tired, nourish yourself with healthy food, and take breaks when your thoughts feel heavy. Choosing peace, quiet moments, and gentle routines is not selfish, it’s essential. Self-care is how you protect your strength, restore your spirit, and survive seasons that feel overwhelming.

Create New Traditions That Bring Peace

If old traditions feel painful or heavy, it’s okay to let them go and create new ones that support your healing. The holidays don’t have to look the same every year. Peace can be found in simple, meaningful moments—taking a quiet walk, journaling your thoughts, volunteering to help others, lighting a candle, or choosing intentional self-care. New traditions allow you to honor where you are now, protect your emotional well-being, and create space for comfort, hope, and gentle healing.

Depression During the Holidays
The holiday season is often painted as a time of joy, celebration, and togetherness, but for many people, it brings a deep sense of sadness, loneliness, and emotional heaviness. Memories of loved ones who are no longer here, financial stress, family conflict, or the pressure to “be happy” can make depression feel even more overwhelming. While others are celebrating, some are quietly fighting battles no one else can see.

Depression during the holidays can show up as withdrawing from others, feeling disconnected, struggling with fatigue, or losing interest in traditions that once brought joy. The contrast between how a person feels and what the world expects can intensify the pain. But even in the darkness, there is hope and there are steps that can help bring relief and strength.

How to Overcome Holiday Depression
1. Give Yourself Permission to Feel: You don’t have to pretend. Acknowledge your emotions with compassion. Allow yourself to grieve, rest, and honor where you are without guilt.
2. Stay Connected, Even in Small Ways: Reach out to someone you trust a friend, family member, mentor, or support group. Even a brief conversation can lift emotional weight and remind you that you are not alone.
3. Create New Traditions That Bring Peace: If old traditions feel painful, it’s okay to redesign the holiday in a way that supports your healing. Choose activities that bring comfort—walks, journaling, volunteering, or simple acts of self-care.
4. Practice Intentional Self-Care: Get enough sleep, eat nourishing foods, and take breaks when your mind feels overwhelmed. Self-care is not selfish—it is survival.
5. Focus on What You Can Control: The holidays can bring pressure and expectations. Instead of trying to meet everyone’s demands, choose what feels manageable and meaningful for you.
6. Seek Support When You Need It: If depression feels heavy or persistent, connecting with a licensed therapist, counselor, or doctor can provide additional tools to help you through this season.

Three Major Ways to Overcome Trauma
1. Safe Emotional Processing & Support
Healing begins when a woman is given space to express what happened without fear, judgment, or shame. Must be a safe place.
This can include:
• Talking with a trauma-informed counselor or coaches
• Support groups
• Therapeutic journaling
• Sharing her story at her own pace
When a trauma survivor feels seen and heard, the burden she carries becomes lighter.
2. Reconnecting the Body & Mind
Trauma lives in the body, and healing requires gently teaching the body that it is safe again.
This may include:
• Therapeutic massage and bodywork
• Breathing exercises and mindfulness
• Gentle movement (stretching, walking, yoga)
• Learning how to release stored tension
When the body relaxes, the mind can begin to rebuild trust and balance.
3. Rebuilding Identity, Purpose & Hope
After trauma, many women feel disconnected from who they truly are. Healing comes through:
• Positive affirmations and self-worth practices
• Setting small, achievable goals
• Learning new skills
• Surrounding themselves with empowering community
• Reclaiming their voice, confidence, and purpose
Healing is not about returning to who she used to be, it’s about becoming the stronger, wiser woman she was always meant to be.

FIGHTING DEPRESSION
When someone is fighting depression, even the smallest act of compassion can bring a little light into their darkness. Many times, they just need to feel seen, heard, and understood without judgment. Here are three gentle, empathetic ways to encourage them:

1. Let Them Know They’re Not Alone:
A simple reminder like “I’m here with you” can help ease their sense of isolation.

2. Validate Their Feelings Without Judgment
Assure them that what they’re feeling is real and that it’s okay to not be okay.

3.Encourage Small Steps of Hope
Support them in taking tiny steps forward, one breath, one moment, one action at a time.

Hold On The Pain Ends.
Hope is the quiet strength that carries you when everything else feels too heavy. It’s the whisper that says “keep going” even when the world has gone silent.
Hope rebuilds, restores, and reminds you that your story is not over. You’ve seen it in every woman who walks through your doors,
the shaking hands, the tired eyes, the brave smile.
And yet they rise. With guidance, compassion, and support,
HOPE becomes the turning point.

A Message from the Heart

It is becoming harder than ever for women in domestic violence situations to find safety and support. Many organizations that once offered shelter, resources, and protection are no longer receiving the funding they desperately need. And while the need keeps rising, the help keeps shrinking.

For far too many women, the journey to a safe place is met with closed doors, waiting lists, or no resources at all. They are left feeling unseen, unheard, and unprotected, at the very moment they need help the most. BUT, their lives still matter. Their stories still matter and we cannot let them walk this path alone.

Purple Light Touch Foundation stands in the gap, doing everything we can with what little we have because every woman deserves safety, dignity, and a chance to rebuild her life.

Living in a threatening environment keeps the body and mind in survival mode.
2. Depression & Hopelessness
Isolation, control, and emotional pain can make life feel heavy and overwhelming.
3. Low Self-Esteem & Self-Worth
Abusers break confidence through criticism, manipulation, and emotional damage.
4. PTSD & Trauma Responses
Flashbacks, nightmares, and triggers can continue long after the abuse ends.
5. Difficulty Trusting Others

Our Story

Purple Light Touch Foundation is a 501(c)3 designed exclusively to empower, uplift and transform women and young girls Our goal is to impact the community by providing a unique service offering free therapeutic massages, mentoring, prayer, support sessions, basic computer skills and empowerment for those suffering from various types of life altering circumstances.

Valerie Kelso, our Founder and CEO found that massages were beneficial for her healing and wanted to share this benefit with those that have suffered their own trauma. We know how critical it is for someone that has been through any type of trauma to receive emotional and physical support. Women and young girls need a place where they can relax and express their emotions to begin a healing process and that is what we provide. We offer a young girl’s support program that helps them identify with their trauma such as abuse, bullying, self-esteem issues, depression, suicidal thoughts and eating disorders. We also have women’s support programs that help them begin a new journey after experiencing domestic violence, abuse, cancer, divorce, PTSD, loss of a loved one and so much more. We at PLT are here to offer a safe calm place to help our clients grow and overcome their trauma.

Our philosophy is if you feel better you do better.
