Let's talk about family dyamics... We hope your Thanksgiving was peaceful, but if you noticed that being around family makes your depression or anxiety worse, it may be time to talk to a trauma informed therapist. This article explains some underlying family patterns that frequently contribute to depression and anxiety.
Working with a therapist often means showing up to do the emotional work with someone who is willing to listen, validate, and heal wounds that were caused by someone who is not willing or able to do that work. Therapy is not about blaming others, but in order to heal from relational trauma, people often need to feel seen and heard first.
The next phase of relational healing is recognizing what is in your control and what is not, and doing what you can with what is in your control.
From there, people often either decide: Yes, I am healed enough now to continue in a relationship with this other, and now I know how to have my own back and take good care of myself when others will not. Or, you may decide that the relationship is too dangerous and you must seek space.
No matter how your relationships with others change, effective trauma informed relational therapy can help you release things that you have been holding on to for far too long, and improve your relationship with yourself. That is the outcome we want for our clients!
