From Farm Roots to Behavioral Health Leadership
The story of Stonington Institute begins in World War 2, when Nicholas P. Schultz joined the US Army Air Corps in 1943. After flying everything from bi-planes to bombers, he returned home in 1945 and, with his wife Edna, purchased a humble property called Starlite Farm in North Stonington.
They built a thriving farm, selling fresh produce from a carriage barn, now the Stonington Cafeteria. In 1957, the farm took on a new purpose: helping people in recovery through the principles of Alcoholics Anonymous.
Over the decades, Stonington evolved into one of Connecticut’s largest behavioral health providers, offering care across the full continuum, from detox to outpatient therapy. Our expert clinical teams treat both substance use and co-occurring mental health disorders, all within a supportive, evidence-based framework.
We’re proud to be Connecticut’s longest continuously operating substance use treatment facility and we remain committed to helping individuals transform their lives.
