CHILD PREDATOR GROOMING: RECOGNIZING THE WARNING SIGNS
Not all predators use violence to gain access to victims - many groom their targets and families first. Awareness is our first line of defense.
Here are 5 subtle red flags and some resources that every parent and guardian in New York should know:
1 - Unusual Attention or Gifts:
They give your child gifts, money, or privileges without a clear reason.
2 - Isolation Efforts:
They try to get the child alone or away from supervision “to help,” “teach,” or “mentor.”
3 - Excessive Communication:
They message your child frequently or at odd hours — especially through private social media accounts or games.
4 - Boundary Testing:
They make comments that blur the line between appropriate and inappropriate (“you’re mature for your age,” “you look grown up”).
5 - Grooming the Family:
They go out of their way to earn your trust - volunteering, helping with chores, or offering childcare - to reduce suspicion.
Remember: Grooming is manipulation. The goal is always access and control. If something feels off, trust your instincts and report concerns to local law enforcement or child protective services.
If you suspect grooming or abuse:
