“Did you know that Mayan families in Guatemala, consider bedsharing to be the only way to parent through the night?

Did you know that in Japan, breastfeeding and shared sleep (soine) is seen as a means to sustain connection through touch or ‘skinship’ between mother and child?

Did you know that In Bali, babies’ feet don’t touch the ground until 3 months of age?

Yet, we’re told in western culture that our babies need to sleep on their own, that we need to get our babies on a schedule and that we can ‘spoil’ them if we pick them up ‘too much’.

One of my favourite cross-cultural pieces of research to share to help us challenge the mainstream parenting narrative, comes from Dr. Charlotte Peterson. She spent forty years traveling the globe to live with local families and witness parenting practices in peaceful cultures. She observed that in Bali, babies are seen as a blessing.

At three months of age, there is a ceremony called Tiga Bulan or “three moons”. It is not until the celebration of this ceremony that a new baby’s feet touch the earth. Until that point, the baby is considered “of the heavens” and is constantly held in someone’s arms.

After the ceremony, the baby is considered “of the earth”. Although a baby can be put down and “out of arms” at this point, Charlotte has rarely seen a Balinese infant or toddler not being held or closely watched, by her parents or family members, within those first three months.

For me, it feels validating to gain a different perspective, reminding us that our instincts to hold our babies close are ancient, wise and innately human. I seek out research like this as it allows me to better understand the difference between social norms & what’s best for our babies.”

Hi!!! It’s me, Raegan. Bout time for a fresh intro! I’m a mother of two, wife to one, and friend to many. My path in this life is healing, plants, women, and babies. I am divinely guided. (How could it be otherwise? Who wakes up and says, wow, sounds fun to walk people through portals) The work I do is deeply personal, intimate, and often intense. As I settle into the confirmation of my calling, I am curious, hopeful, and excited to discover where it leads me. I am always busy, scheming, growing- doing a million things at once with a never ending to do list. A lifelong student. I’m finally owning my gifts of being a source of grounded energy and bringing people together. HMU for local resources!

I love dancing to live music, spending time in nature with my family and friends. You can call me “crunchy” but I don’t like labels and I don’t play favorites. I am a manifesting generator, Ta**us sun/Virgo rising/Scorpio moon in the western zodiac, but an Aries if we’re talking true sky. I enjoy exploring these concepts but take them lightly. There are so many factors to who we are!

I moved around a TON growing up, 18 schools by graduation and probably lived in 25-30 homes so far. I’m an open book and there is so much more to my story but I’ll stop rambling now 😉
I’m your friendly neighborhood doula and community herbalist. I do what I can with tje best of my ability, and I’ll always have your back💜🌀🌿✨

In honor of World Breastfeeding Week , share your story . The more we share the more we normalize and can help other mothers with their journeys . 🤍 also realize that every experience and journey is unique to each mama baby dyad .

For me breastfeeding did not always feel easy , there were things to get the hang of and SO MUCH learning in the beginning with my first .

Thanks to resources and support I went on to breastfeed for 52 + months straight ( and counting), nurse through pregnancy , through labor , went on to tandem feed , am nursing through pregnancy again and looks like I will tandem nurse once again !

Breastfeeding is giving ALL of yourself , for what feels like ALL the time . It’s giving while tired , sick , overstimulated, busy - anything . Its not being able to have any breaks because your baby wont take a bottle or paci , or just doesnt want to be away from you , or you can only go a short distance for under two hours because thats the limit! It’s having to take into special consideration what youre eating to not upset or hurt them. It’s constantly living for and thinking of someone else even in your sleep.

Because youre not just your baby’s source of food you are also their safe place and comfort . While it’s a beautiful and sacrificial experience, it can some times feel overwhelming and isolating. You are not alone in this and all of those feelings are valid . We can sympathize with each other in this while celebrating all of the amazing emotions and things that also come from continuing to give in the most selfless way.

So nourishing and replenishing . I bring to births in a camping thermos for labor or immediate postpartum. All through out postpartum it is extremely beneficial as well.
