John Power/Integrated Muscular Therapy & Fitness, LLC

John Power/Integrated Muscular Therapy & Fitness, LLC John Power, MA Licensed Massage Therapist, NSCA Certified Personal Trainer since 2001 It is both holistic, evidence based and comprehensive.

I have been a licensed massage therapist in Northampton Massachusetts for over 10 years. I am also a NSCA Certified Personal Trainer as well as a Certified Neuromuscular Therapist and a NASM Corrective Exercise Specialist. I have participated in numerous continuing education workshops on flexibility, therapeutic exercise, injury rehab, manual therapy and sport performance training. I have a unique practice that spans injury rehab, fitness training and movement awareness. I work with people, not injuries only or diseases. I conduct extensive biomechanical assessments and at the same time I value how the mind and emotions can play a significant part in the human experience, which includes injuries, pain and athletic performance. I try to see how the small and big picture are part of the whole picture. One aspect of my work is therapy/rehab for injuries and painful conditions. I combine hands on therapy with movement reeducation, corrective and therapeutic exercise. I specialize in sports injuries and treating chronic pain states. Fitness training is another component of my work. I work with individuals and teach small group exercise classes. My knowledge of the injury and healing process is always present in my fitness training work. I place great emphasis on moving from inside/out to facilitate better self awareness, improve spatial (posture) control and increase muscle activation patterns. My success as a trainer/therapist is my ability to integrate various techniques, transitioning "patients" with injuries, limitations and pain to people who are pursuing exercise and fitness as a means of promoting health and improving human/athletic performance. I also teach individual sessions and workshops on assessment techniques, functional anatomy and injury treatment techniques to yoga teachers, Pilates instructors, massage therapists and exercise specialists.

This is a great article about running mechanics and energy systems.

This is a great article about running mechanics and energy systems.

We invited three elite runners to run on the world’s fastest treadmill to examine the differences between running fast and running far (but still pretty fast).

This is a follow up on my previous post about sciatic nerve/hip joint mobilizations. Performing this mob standing is effective for situations when you can’t get on a floor/ground such as in the middle of a run. This is an “active” stretch: chest up, strong standing leg, establish comfortable start position for hamstrings, draw femur back/lean forward, press down on thigh near groin, rotate femur in (more intense), turn torso across body (internal hip rotation standing leg), breathe!

That's right, no more icing.

That's right, no more icing.

Icing muscles after strenuous exercise is not just ineffective, it could be counterproductive, a new study in mice suggests.

Sciatic nerve, hamstring and hip joint mobilization. Buttock pain (piriformis syndrome), hamstring tightness and hip stiffness are often linked to lumbar spine and gait mechanics. Yoga strap works best: straight leg raise (keep knee fully ext), move foot around, press thigh (this tractions hip joint) and move leg across midline (pelvis flat on floor). Go slow to start! ,

Wall Ball Squats, excellent quad exercise. I’ve found these to be really effective for patellar tendon pain. Single leg variation for runners and cyclists.

This is an effective single leg/lunge pattern exercise that works several things at once. Contact w/the cloth on the floor aids stability, enhances movement awareness, adding pressure to the cloth increases demand on both limbs. These exercises help balance movement and muscle actions of the pelvis, hip and legs, feet. Train movement, not muscles.

Knee Injuries for Older Athletes March 29, 2021 by John I’ve written a few posts about knee injuries, they are one of the most common complaints I see especially since I work with many aging clients. A recent conversation with a client with knee pain encouraged me to write this post. A Common Scen...
