If you're one of the 40%, you know how difficult the situation can be.

Chaos, lies and deceipt become the norm. Communications break down. It can feel impossible to know how to respond and to know what to say. And extremely confusing knowing what you can do to encourage their recovery while discouraging their use and other problematic behaviors.

Allies in Recovery guides families through an evidence-based approach that improves your relationships, encourages recovery and brings stress and anxiety levels down for the family.

If your finances were keeping you from getting a membership at Allies in Recovery, to learn the CRAFT method, designed for families with a Loved One struggling with substances, NOW IS YOUR CHANCE. ❤️

We had to take our member site offline after losing our funding because of massive federal and state budget cuts, but we have now put ALL our learning videos and worksheets back online for FREE. ❤️

Go to our YouTube channel and start watching today. NO STRINGS ATTACHED AT ALL. ❤️https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgD_D40PrKF-OWWtFU_Xlgg/

Love and solidarity to everyone struggling with SUD and to everyone who loves someone who struggles with SUD, from the Allies team ❤️

When you are trying your best to work with a family member in recovery from Substance Use Disorder (SUD), it can be frightening and disappointing to discover they are using again. What to do?

One of our AlliesinRecovery.net members wrote in about her son having a recurrence of use, and she wonders whether she should confront him or not. She feels she can’t bear the emotional rollercoaster of her son’s recovery journey.

We weigh in with some reminders from the CRAFT approach about how to manage her own thoughts, feelings, and reactions. We suggest she stay the course and not confront him – at least not yet.

This story brings the basic steps of the CRAFT method into sharp focus with an account of their loved one’s progress. Behind-the-scenes work, patience, and a willingness to communicate in a new way paved the way for new possibilities. Their loved one is engaged and happy and has newfound purpose in his life.

Community Reinforcement and Family Training (CRAFT) works: a loved one with SUD is more than twice as likely to enter treatment, and 3-4 times more likely to stay in treatment and recovery; 70% of families are able to engage a loved one into treatment, and 80-90% percent say their relationship with a loved one with SUD is greatly improved, and their own stress levels greatly reduced. This story brings the basic steps of the CRAFT method into sharp focus with an account of their loved one’s progress. Behind-the-scenes work, patience, and a willingness to communicate in a new way paved the way for new possibilities. "I’m afraid to write this for fear of “jinxing” our situation, but this site helped spark monumental changes in my family, and we are all so thankful to Allies in Recovery. I have been seeking help for over a decade. My son simply could not function in the outside world with his pot addiction and binge drinking. I know people who function well on perpetual pot, but it had a huge effect on my adult son.

Here’s how our lives transpired when I found this website.....". Reminder: our member site is currently offline as we work on finding a new source of funding, but we have put up this website, open to the public, with a plethora of tools and resources, in the meantime: https://alliesinrecovery.net/

Some words about use of drugs or alcohol are now understood to be stigmatizing. We have done some onscreen replacements to highlight the terms that are preferred. Some examples of stigmatizing terms and their replacement are listed below.

Addict —> person with Substance Use Disorder or Opioid Use Disorder
Alcoholic —> person with Alcohol Use Disorder
Clean —> testing negative on a drug screen; being abstinent from use; not drinking or taking drugs; in recovery
Sober —> not using; in recovery
Abuse —> misuse, harmful use
Enabling —> enabling is a term we no longer like to use. We are now using encouraging or discouraging use.

Are you a "YES person" or a "NO person?" According to Kayla, each of us has a tendency in one direction or the other. Find out what practice she recommends for "YES people" and why. But why is it so hard for so many of us to say "no" to people we love?

Bridget, one of our co-hosts, admits that in her relationship with her Loved One, she used to operate from a place of fear. "I thought if I said 'no', I'd never see him again."

Join us for a pertinent exploration of a laden subject. "YES" and "NO" often happen automatically for us, but what would start to shift for the better if we became more mindful of why we're answering that way? 🫷🏻🚦 🙅‍♀️ 🛑

The support group that Kayla facilitates is now offered on a sliding scale.
