Yesterday, the New York Times published a fantastic article about ways hospitals and providers can safely reduce their cesarean rates, and it outlines so much of what we teach in our childbirth preparation classes:

1. Midwifery care for low-risk pregnancies
2. Changing the way doctors are paid for doing (or not doing) surgeries
3. The importance of movement in labor (shout out to Spinning Babies!)
4. Providing training and education for nurses and providers who are fearful/ill-equipped at managing labor and vaginal birth
5. Childbirth education classes
6. Providing pregnant people with realistic expectations for how long labor or induction can be
7. Offering to start cervical ripening at home before admission to the hospital
8. Being patient in labor, especially with first-time parents, whose labor takes more time

Articles like this are very validating for birth professionals like us! It reminds us that we ARE making a difference by educating expectant parents about their rights and options in childbirth!

If you took our childbirth classes, did the information you learn help you avoid a cesarean or advocate for your birth wishes? We would love to hear about it!

Please tag or share with a pregnant friend or relative!

Financial and social incentives can nudge doctors away from the operating room.
