Cawn/Krantz is a pediatric clinic providing cutting-edge interventions for children and their families. Our interdisciplinary staff -licensed and experienced speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, developmental therapists, and social workers—are experts in providing individual assessments and interventions based on a child's unique profile. Our intervention programs are unique to each child: as a child develops and adapts, so do our interventions. Guided by the DIR/Floortime® Model, we emphasize the child's individual differences and the effect those differences have on how the child relates, communicates, and learns. Our therapy environment further encourages movement, exploration, and sensory stimulation. Our clinic is in-network with BCBS PPO and Humana insurance.

The science of attachment research (not the same thing as attachment parenting) points to responsive care as the key ingredient to building strong relationships. This means when a baby cries, we try to soothe and help them, while trying to figure out what they need. We can't be perfect at this, because it's a learning process! That’s okay, & how we form an attachment❣️

Need a fun end of the school year (or summer) snack activity? Here’s one of my all- time favorites! These teddy bears are kicking off summer with a day at the beach!

All you need are:
🏖 Teddy grahams
🏖 Fruit roll ups (cut in tiny beach towel sizes)
🏖 Gummy Lifesaver
🏖 icing from a can tinted with blue food coloring
🏖 a plain cookie (I use sugar cookies)

TARGET following directions;
🔵What to get first, next, last
🔵 how many teddy grahams to take
🔵 location where students should to put each Item (put icing on HALF of the cookie, put 1 teddy IN the gummy float on top of the icing, put one teddy lying ON (or on top of) the “beach towel”

TARGET colors/numbers/quantity (more, fewer, none, some, all, less, most, etc.)
🔵 Target colors if your gummies and fruit roll ups are different colors!
🔵 Let students drop X number of drops to the icing and stir X number of times

TARGET answering Wh- questions:
🔵 When do we go to the beach?
🔵 Why do we use a float?
🔵 Where can we swim?
🔵 Why do people like the beach?
🔵 What would you wear to the beach?
🔵 Why shouldn’t the teddy just lay on the sand instead of the towel?
🔵 What else can we use a towel for?
🔵 What could you see at the beach?

TARGET describing by bringing shells, sand, a beach ball, sunglasses, sunscreen, and even a float of some kind etc. to the lesson! So many kids don’t get to interact with those items. 💙

Last but not least, describe all the different tastes!

Don’t You just love a good multisensory ?

Scene: yesterday, educational consult

A. Laurent: “We (educational teams) should never be writing social emotional mental health goals to help kids navigate the trauma we are actively causing by being rigid about what we think “best practice” educational settings are and by not considering an individual student’s profiles and accommodating their specific needs when it comes to what constitutes a safe and supportive environment.” - mic drop,

End scene.

Individual priority is, at minimum, 1/3 of the evidence base in evidenced-based practice. Empirical research does not and should not trump individual need. When a kid calls a
classroom a nightmare - believe them.

A Must Read!!!

Early interventions for autism lack solid data. The source of this problem is murky but may stem from ongoing debates about evidence quality and entrenched conflicts of interest within the field.

Call for Sensory Toys! Galina Itskovich, who is coordinating efforts to help Ukrainian families for mental health and developmental support, has a call for sensory toys and items like weighted blankets that are pricy and hard to get for refugee families. Taking a first step, smiling for the first time, and waving “bye bye” are called developmental milestones. Which ones has your child reached?

Little things can make a big difference in helping to support children's executive functioning skills. Encourage your child to "show and tell me" their plan. The simple act of gesturing out their plan can really help them execute their plan!
For example, instead of just saying, "I am going to put my clothes away, then take a shower, then brush my teeth, then get in bed," have them gesture as they tell you. You will be shocked by how much better they do following through on their plan!

Kids Sit Right If They Can...

(but crisscross applesauce isn't "right")

It's a cute saying, it rhymes, but actually, "crisscross applesauce" is not a good sitting position. If you want children to pay attention, we need to position them for success!

Getting creative with sitting positions and getting kids involved in the process is a win-win for everyone!

Sorry, applesauce. We love you, too!

It’s so common to blame children’s “will” or intention to make a point for their behaviors. Behaviors are more complicated, though.

Our bodies produce the launching pad for behaviors. I can’t wait to share more about how this happens and why it changes parenting practices in my new book, available now for preorder!

Therapist Neurodiversity Collective is stunned, and ecstatic to report that the proposed SIG for was unanimously denied! ❤️❤️❤️ This outcome is the direct result of grassroots activism! To everyone who participated in fighting this proposal, THANK YOU. To the American Speech & Hearing Association Board of Directors, THANK YOU for hearing us, and for this demonstration of cultural humility! There is still a LOT of work to do friends, but this is an amazing feat. ♾❤

We sat down with... wait...no we didn't. We stood (because, we don't sit down) and had a conversation with Barry Prizant and Finch the hosts of the Uniquely Human Podcast.

We remember laughing a lot and taking quite a few tangential detours, as we do- especially when we've started our day at 4am EST because we're supporting an amazing team in Australia- Leveling UP Down Under.

We "think" we remember covering Leveling UP! the SCERTS Model with extensive input from the autistic community to develop autistic driven initiatives and supports with the goal of improving quality of life for autistic people.

Yes, yes, and yes! And I would add: Needs us to help them respect other people's boundaries, as excitement and changes in routine tend to lessen our children's impulse control.

🙀 Does your child struggle getting started?

Whether it’s cleaning their room, beginning with homework, or getting going on their morning routine, many of our loved ones struggle with the executive function of INITIATION. 😮‍💨

👏👏👏There are many ways to support the development of this skill.

⛔️⚠️But, beware….

❌ Yelling at your child or prompting them when it’s time to get started only reinforces a narrative of dependency.

✅ If our goal is the development of independent task initiation, then we have to help kids “see” their goal.

✅ We need to help support tgetting started by creating a scaffolded support plan.

✅ Previewing the work — helping others visualize what needs to get done and which specific steps they need to take to get there — can make a tremendous difference.

If you or your child struggles to get started, reach out to NSEF for help. 🤲
