Astellas Global Health Foundation

Astellas Global Health Foundation We strive to help the most neglected among us to build toward our core mission: One World, A Healthier Tomorrow.

The Astellas Global Health Foundation is dedicated to improving access to health, building resilient communities and providing disaster support for vulnerable populations in low- and middle-income countries where Astellas doesn't have a business presence. In total, the Foundation has awarded more than $30 million in worldwide funding over 12 years. This includes nearly $5 million in new grants since the Foundation’s formation in 2018 and previous grants awarded by the three former Astellas philanthropic entities that merged to form the AGHF – the Astellas USA Foundation (AUSF), the Astellas European Foundation (AEF), and the Astellas Asia-Oceanic Foundation (AAOF).

When one of our very own board members, Shingo, travels to visit humanitarian projects supported by AGHF, he doesn’t just witness programs in action, he sees communities growing stronger.

Meeting with local leaders, health workers, and families renews his appreciation for the power of community-driven solutions.

For Shingo, the experience reaffirms AGHF’s mission: investing in communities and local leaders to create lasting impact.

By 2030, the world could face a shortage of 10 million health workers – nearly 1 million in Africa alone. But just one trained community health worker can spark change across entire communities.

At AGHF, we see this ripple effect in action. With the support of AGHF funds, our partners have trained 54 volunteers in Yemen, reaching 14,000+ people with life-saving vaccination and nutrition education. In Senegal, 120 volunteers made 7,200 home visits, reaching more than 22,000 people with health education and connecting children to critical care.

Because community health workers are essential to strengthening local health systems, the Foundation is launching a new three-year grant category focused on developing the community health workforce.

Amref Health Africa's latest report tells stories like that of Arouna Savané, a carpenter from rural Senegal, whose 2-year-old daughter, Mariama, needed surgery that his family couldn't afford – until our partnership brought specialized surgical camps directly to his community.

Amref didn’t just deliver healthcare, they built systems to train community health volunteers and ensure local doctors can provide follow-up care long after the surgical camps ended.

As one local health official, Dr. Aldo Djegui, said: "This partnership shows that together we can make a real impact and improve access to care where it's most needed."

In Yemen, where nearly 80% of people lack access to basic healthcare, our partnership with International Medical Corps helped restore not just health systems - but trust, resilience, and hope.

With support from the Astellas Global Health Foundation, 13 health facilities across the country were upgraded with solar-powered electricity, clean water and sanitation, and secure storage for temperature-sensitive medicines and vaccines. Thanks to these improvements, 64,000 people have received essential care, 11,000 women and children have been screened for malnutrition, and vaccination coverage increased by 41%.

Behind every number is a story - like that of Ali, a 2.5-year-old from a remote village who was found unconscious from severe diarrhea. His mother carried him on foot to the nearest AGHF-supported Diarrheal Treatment Center, where health workers provided immediate, life-saving care. Over two days, Ali was treated for malaria and suspected cholera - and his mother learned how to prevent future illness and protect her family’s health.

Today, Ali is thriving - one of countless children in Yemen whose futures are brighter because emergency care is now within reach.

They walk from house to house, carrying flip charts and hope. They train neighbors on disease prevention, connect families to care, and serve as the bridge between communities and health systems.

Community health workers go beyond aiding public health – they’re neighbors helping neighbors. Community members who understand the local language, customs, and challenges, and who can build the trust that makes real change possible. Join us in thanking and recognizing CHWs for all they do.

Meet Emma, one of our Board Members, whose personal story drives everything we do at AGHF.

Growing up with parents moving between Africa and the Caribbean, Emma experienced firsthand what it means when help comes from the outside versus when it comes from within. That experience shaped not just her perspective, but her unwavering belief in something we hold dear at AGHF: local solutions work best.

Behind every grant we make, every partnership we build, and every life we impact, there are people like Emma who know that real change happens when we believe in local expertise and invest in lasting solutions. The best global health work isn't about us - it's about them. And that makes all the difference.

It’s International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, and we're reminded that climate change isn't just an environmental issue – it's a health crisis.

In Peru's Loreto region, increased flooding creates perfect conditions for diseases like malaria, dengue, and leptospirosis to spread. But communities aren't waiting for the next disaster to strike.

Through our partnership with Plan International USA, local health workers like Marioli, a dental surgeon in Santo Tomás, are leading the charge. "This initiative helps many families... providing them with tools to generate progress," Marioli says.

Today is , and we're thinking about a troubling reality: many people across the world lack access to effective mental health treatment. This is especially true in low-resource settings like Kenya.

That's why our partnership with Ampath Kenya means so much. With the help of AGHF funds, AMPATH built the Dr. Edith Kwobah Nawiri Recovery and Skills Center – the only facility of its kind in East Africa. Since opening in 2021, Nawiri has helped over 150 people living with severe mental illnesses like schizophrenia and bipolar disorder transition back to their communities with the skills and support they need to thrive.

Mental health is healthcare, and everyone deserves access. Learn more at https://www.astellasglobalhealthfoundation.org/Ampath.html

In rural Senegal, many kids miss school, not because they don’t want to learn, but because health issues keep them home.

That’s why AGHF supports mobile health clinics that bring doctors, dentists, and eye care straight to schools. From when the program kicked off in 2023, over 10,000 children have received free care – like glasses to help them see the board or treatment for ear infections that were affecting their hearing, thanks to our partnership with Amref Health Africa in the USA.

When kids are healthy, they’re ready to learn. And when care comes to them, nothing gets in the way of their education. 📚

What makes AGHF different? We focus on communities that are often overlooked - and invest in the people who know them best.

Instead of quick fixes, we fund our partner organizations to support local leaders and build health systems that last. That means training community health workers, strengthening infrastructure, and creating programs communities can sustain on their own.

When you trust local expertise, real change takes root – and keeps growing.

In the last few years, we’ve seen that when communities lead, impact lasts.

Local ownership drives stronger engagement and more sustainable health financing. Integrated care supports the whole person – not just the illness. And climate preparedness works best when training starts before a crisis hits.

At AGHF, we don’t just fund programs, we invest in community-led solutions that are built to last. Learn more. https://www.astellasglobalhealthfoundation.org/
