We strive to help the most neglected among us to build toward our core mission: One World, A Healthier Tomorrow.

The Astellas Global Health Foundation is dedicated to improving access to health, building resilient communities and providing disaster support for vulnerable populations in low- and middle-income countries where Astellas doesn't have a business presence. In total, the Foundation has awarded more than $30 million in worldwide funding over 12 years. This includes nearly $5 million in new grants since the Foundation’s formation in 2018 and previous grants awarded by the three former Astellas philanthropic entities that merged to form the AGHF – the Astellas USA Foundation (AUSF), the Astellas European Foundation (AEF), and the Astellas Asia-Oceanic Foundation (AAOF).

The Astellas Global Health Foundation is supporting Johanniter International Assistance with a USD 250,000 grant to strengthen health and disaster resilience in Cabo Delgado province, Mozambique. Through the SHIELD Project, Johanniter is rehabilitating and equipping health facilities in the Mecúfi and Metuge districts so they can remain functional during crises. In parallel, the project is reinforcing climate-resilient water and sanitation systems and improving infection prevention and outbreak response.

Cabo Delgado has faced repeated crises. Health facilities are often damaged or disrupted when demand for care increases, leaving vulnerable communities without essential services during emergencies. Without stronger local preparedness and resilient health systems, communities remain trapped in cycles of crisis and fragile recovery.

That’s why the SHIELD project is critical. Benefiting 15,000+ people directly and 100,000+ indirectly, the project aims to improve access to reliable health services, reduce waterborne diseases, and strengthen preparedness for future shocks.

CBM Christoffel-Blindenmission in Deutschland is expanding inclusive mental health and psychosocial support services in Guatemala and Honduras, reaching people who often face the greatest barriers to care, including Indigenous communities, pregnant women, adolescents, and persons with and without disabilities in underserved and rural areas.

The Astellas Global Health Foundation is supporting this expansion with a USD 1.5 million, three-year grant.

The project seeks to deliver comprehensive mental health care through culturally appropriate individual counseling, group support, and community prevention activities. CBM also aims to strengthen local systems by training practitioners and coordinating with authorities to ensure sustainable, long-term improvements.

The Astellas Global Health Foundation has awarded USD 2.15 million in new grants to support community-based health solutions in Latin America and Africa.

CBM Christoffel-Blindenmission in Deutschland (CBM)
Supporting inclusive mental health and psychosocial services in Guatemala and Honduras, with a focus on adolescents, women, and persons with disabilities. Activities include community-based counselling, awareness raising, and strengthening referral and institutional systems.

St John International | St John Malawi
Strengthening community-based emergency and first aid services in Lirangwe and Ameca Catchment Areas of Blantyre Rural, Southern Malawi by training and equipping 4,000 Community Health Workers to act as first responders and health educators.

Johanniter International Assistance
Improving disaster preparedness and health system resilience in northern Mozambique through climate-resilient health facilities, trained health workers and community responders, and strengthened local disaster risk management structures.

Together, these initiatives are expected to reach nearly 856,000 people, strengthening local health systems and expanding access to essential care.

Do you know what makes the Astellas Global Health Foundation special?

Last year, we supported International Medical Corps in refurbishing and upgrading 13 health facilities in rural Yemen, which will significantly increase health care access for the highly vulnerable population in the catchment area, people who often have nowhere to turn for the medical support they desperately need.

This isn't just about doing good (though it definitely is that). It's actually part of our sustainability strategy. Celebrating 7 Years of Global Impact 🌍

Seven years ago, three regional foundations came together to form the Astellas Global Health Foundation (AGHF) – an organization dedicated to advancing health equity worldwide. Since then, we’ve invested more than $13 million in grants to support partners across multiple continents.

By 2030, the world could face a shortage of 10 million health workers – nearly 1 million in Africa alone. But just one trained community health worker can spark change across entire communities.

At AGHF, we see this ripple effect in action. With the support of AGHF funds, our partners have trained 54 volunteers in Yemen, reaching 14,000+ people with life-saving vaccination and nutrition education. In Senegal, 120 volunteers made 7,200 home visits, reaching more than 22,000 people with health education and connecting children to critical care.

Because community health workers are essential to strengthening local health systems, the Foundation is launching a new three-year grant category focused on developing the community health workforce.

Amref Health Africa's latest report tells stories like that of Arouna Savané, a carpenter from rural Senegal, whose 2-year-old daughter, Mariama, needed surgery that his family couldn't afford – until our partnership brought specialized surgical camps directly to his community.

Amref didn’t just deliver healthcare, they built systems to train community health volunteers and ensure local doctors can provide follow-up care long after the surgical camps ended.

As one local health official, Dr. Aldo Djegui, said: "This partnership shows that together we can make a real impact and improve access to care where it's most needed."
