Our client is a long distance runner, and she came in after seeing multiple providers, and underwent months of rehab with no real progress.

On her own, she was performing loaded interventions + speed interventions without having some of the minimum requirements to MAXIMIZE her function.

We found limitations in her ankle range of motion, knee mobility, hip strength, and single leg stability. We start addressing these deficits in a STEP-BY-STEP fashion, and she’s starting to see results 💪🏾. Sometimes people progress things too quickly, leading to continued pain.

Definitely not for everyone with knee pain, but here’s a strategy we sometimes use for individuals experiencing joint-related pain with bending the knee.

A towel behind the knee helps to create some space in the joint as you sit your hips back towards your feet. The strap helps to stabilize the towel + create a little more force with the mobilization.

Typically right after this, we recheck the painful movement (squatting or just bending the knee) to see what changes were made 🙏🏾

Our eval process is 1 on 1 with our docs for an hour. The MOST important part though is the first 20 minutes. We sit and chat with you about your symptoms, what you’re experiencing, what you’ve tried to treat it, your workout routine, etc. That actually gives us an 80% idea of what’s going on.

THEN we look at movement. Watching your movement helps us determine which areas to examine in detail; what areas may be tight/weak/hypermobile; and what movements potentially produce your pain.

This is an example for someone with hip pain. Our upper extremity or spinal evaluations look very different. Not pictured are manual joint assessments to the hip, knee, and ankle, some plank assessments, and our breakdown of what’s going on + the timeline of recovery.

A lot of people think, physical therapy is the same.

We can’t tell you how many times we’ve had the conversation of people explaining their injuries, explaining what was done to rehab it, and then we realize they were doing the wrong things.

Think about it like this: If your bathroom has a leak, and you fix a pipe in the living room, does that fix your bathroom leak? Often times the interventions being prescribed aren’t relevant to the painful area.

🏋Side planks are GAME changers…..when done appropriately.

📝There’s so many modifications and progressions to side planks to make them applicable to you.

☑️Side planks target the glutes and your abs. The specific glute muscles they target help to REDUCE IMPACT with every step you take, or with every stride you take if you’re a runner.

🫡REDUCED IMPACT = better shock absorption = less strain down the system = you feel better.

💪🏾Specifically with runners, this should be a staple in your workouts/training throughout the week. We treat a countless number of injuries with runners and this is almost in everyone’s program.

Most pains still linger because of a LOADING issue….Either too much, too little, or the wrong tissues are being loaded.

👩🏽‍💻Desk jobs….a lot of our clients with low back pain, neck pain, or a deep ache in their shoulder blade tend to be sitting for 5+ hours of the day.

🤕A lot of tissues around the neck, midback, and low back can stiffen up. This can sometimes lead to pain or discomfort in the regions mentioned above.

📝Here are some strategies we use to loosen + strengthen those areas:

😮One of the most underrated and often forgotten muscles is….the lower trap. This is a crucial muscle when it comes to improving your shoulder HEALTH and FUNCTION. A very simple muscle, and a couple of simple movements can make your shoulder feel 10x better.

💪🏾The lower trap rotates your shoulder blade in a manner that encourages space in the shoulder joint to prevent pinching. It also helps with shoulder stability.

📝To work this muscle, place both arms in a Y position. Keep the thumbs up. Raise the arms upward while also adding a bit of rotation. If the movement itself feels pinchy, you might be missing some range of motion at the shoulder!
