A woman typically gains about 1 pound per year during menopause.
While some weight gain is expected and biologically driven, it’s important to know when it becomes a health concern – and what you can do about it.

Olivia Storlie got an unlucky break . . . and then a lucky one.
Liv is a dancer. When she injured her knee, orthopedic surgeon Greg Erickson, MD repaired and reconstructed Liv’s knee with a cutting-edge technique that uses cartilage and plasma from her own body to repair the joint.
This eliminates the need for multiple surgeries and reduces the risk of arthritis down the road. That’s a key consideration for a young athlete.
The recovery was a relief to both Liv and her parents: “We understand this is a procedure that’s not commonly done on 14-year-olds, and we trust the surgeon and his approach on that,” Liv’s mom says.
Childhood vaccines matter. American Academy of Pediatrics sets the gold standard.
AAP uses the ideal timeline for healthy children as their immune system develops. Following the AAP schedule helps babies, children and teens stay ahead of serious, preventable diseases.
Check out AAP's 2026 vaccine schedules for kids birth-age 6, and ages 7-18.
Winter roads can surprise even experienced drivers. 🌨️ Snow, ice, and early darkness make safe driving more important than ever.
Before you head out, check if the roads are safe by visiting www.511mn.org. Plan your trip, taking the weather into consideration, and share that information with others.
If you get stranded, please don't be afraid to call 911. We recommend staying in your car whenever possible and ensuring your tailpipe isn't buried in the snow.
What orthopedic and sports medicine patients say when we help them get back to the life they love:
“Dr. Bengtson did everything in his power to make sure me and my family were confident going through with the surgery. He was always comforting and well-spoken, so reassuring through the whole process.”
“Did my meniscus surgery 15 years ago, and I’ve had no issues since!”
“Dr. Bengtson has been my ortho doc for 25+ years. He did my baby’s trigger thumb and came to get her himself and take her back to surgery. Class act for sure. ❤️”
“Dr. Bengtson is a great surgeon and a kind person. He got me through 4 knee surgeries.”
Winter air can leave skin feeling tight, dry, or irritated. Taking care of it starts with a few easy routines.
Apply moisturizer while your skin is still slightly damp. Cover exposed skin when you head outside. Add a humidifier or drink more water to bring moisture back into your home and your body, respectively.
Small changes can help your skin stay comfortable through the coldest months.

Mark Welinski bumped his head on a deer cart at home.
Then he lost his balance while deer hunting – and suddenly had trouble walking and speaking. Once home, his wife brought him to NH+C’s Emergency Department (ED).
The ED team, imaging staff, and remote stroke specialists through TeleStroke worked together to get answers fast. Within minutes, they confirmed Mark needed advanced care to address a bleed in his brain, and arranged an airlift to a trauma center for brain surgery.
“Thank goodness for the nurses and doctors at Northfield Hospital,” Mark says. “Thank goodness they had the correct equipment to assess me accurately and move me on to the next level of care.”

It was an unusual way to celebrate a birthday. But then, 100 isn’t your typical birthday.
Margit Fredrickson was turning 100. Her son Karl thought she’d like to meet a baby who shares her birthday . . . 100 years apart. He called the Birth Center at Northfield Hospital that day to ask if any new babies had arrived. That’s how Margit met Waylon, just hours after he was born.
We’re proud that Northfield Hospital is a place where community connects . . . for over 115 years.
