The Israel ParaSport Center (formerly Israel Sport Center for the Disabled) is a world-renowned athletic rehabilitation center in Israel that transforms lives. Founded more than 60 years ago, The Center's mission to empower people with disabilit

At our annual torch lighting ceremony last year, Tal Kupershtein lit a torch as a father calling for the return of his son Bar from the tunnels of Gaza. This year, the ceremony was cancelled because of the war. Tal was supposed to light again, this time with Bar by his side. Bar, who we can still barely believe is home after the horrors of captivity.

This year's Israel Remembrance Day and Independence Day arrive after yet another tumultuous year. War at home. So much uncertainty abroad. More lives lost. And at the same time, so much to be grateful for.

We are grateful for safety. For friendship. For sport. For the staff and volunteers who give so much. For the members and their families who have trusted us through two and a half of the hardest years this country has known. For a sport center that is so much more than just a place to go.

We are proud to be a small and beautiful part of Israel's do-good and innovation landscape.

And so we continue to move forward with everlasting hope for what is to come tomorrow.

Happy Yom Haatzmaut. 💙🇮🇱

🎾 #1 in the World. 🌍

Congratulations to Guy Sasson on reaching the top of the ITF wheelchair tennis doubles rankings — making him the #1 ranked doubles player in the world.

Guy has been a dominant force on the international circuit, and this milestone is a testament to the countless hours of work he's put in on and off the court.

We're proud to call him one of our own.

War may be raging, but the world continues to turn, and one of our beloved para table tennis athletes and coaches has just announced his retirement.

He's on the shy side, so not many of you know him. But Aviv Gordon has been a quiet, pivotal presence in the Israel ParaSport Center table tennis community for many years, and his contributions have been anything but small.

At 8 years old, on the eve of Yom Kippur, Aviv was riding his bike with a friend when a bus turned into their path. He managed to signal his friend out of the way, but Aviv hit the bus and was thrown. The bus ran over him and he was in the hospital for six months where he underwent four surgeries to save his foot from amputation. The dream he'd carried until then of becoming a professional soccer player was gone.

Years later, playing around on his grandparents' table tennis table, something clicked. At 15, he realized this could be his new dream. He found his way to the Israel ParaSport Center, and from there he built a career that took him to nearly 30 international tournaments, including the 2018 World Championship and four European Championships. He took home three Maccabiah medals, reached a career-high world ranking of #11, and became vice European champion.

But Aviv's fingerprint on our community goes way beyond his own impressive results. Together with coach Rina Ashkenazi, he co-founded our successful Parkinson's table tennis program. He also coached many young athletes we know and love, including Michael Matos and Omer Gadot.

Ariel Veksler, who trained with Aviv who then encouraged Ariel toward boccia when he could no longer play table tennis standing, wrote: "You entered this sport like a meteor and never gave up, continuing to compete and achieve against all odds. You spent years coaching me, supporting me, and pushing me to reach the highest levels, even when it meant guiding me toward a different sport. It has been a privilege walking alongside someone like you, someone who always reaches their goals, no matter what."

Yehonatan Levi, who shared the table with Aviv many times including winning a pairs medal in Finland just last year and the Israel para league together, said: "I'm so grateful to have been on this journey with you. Together we won a national championship, a state cup, an Israeli pairs title, and competed side by side at the European Championship. None of it would have happened without us being in this together."

And Aviv himself shared: "Thank you to everyone who has been there along the way, who supported, helped, guided and coached throughout all these years. It's been an honor to represent the Israel ParaSport Center."

Aviv, it has been an honor being your home away from home. We wish you every success in whatever comes next — and something tells us this isn't the last we'll hear from you. 🏓🧡

We’re so proud of Yehonatan Levi who completed the ITTF World Para Future Costa Brava Tournament in second place in both singles and doubles!

In singles, he won 5 out of 6 games, with a highlight being his tight 3:2 victory against Sávio Ruiz from Spain ( #20 in the world), coming back from 2:8 and 7:10 down in the fifth set — a match full of twists and determination.

In doubles (with his Chinese Hongshuo Ren), they finished second after some intense matches. After losing their first game, they pulled off a thrilling 3:2 comeback in the quarter finals against a very strong Czech pair (11:9 in the fifth set, coming back from 2:1 down) to reach the semifinals, secured a strong 3:0 win against a Chinese pair before finishing second in the final against the experienced Spanish duo.

Yehonatan showed resilience, focus, and strong performance in every match.

Special thanks to the Spanish hosts who hosted Yehonatan and Idan so warmly.

Yehonatan's coach is Idan Levi. They will now continue training abroad before continuing on to their next tournament.

Adam Zborovsky is a long-time athlete at the Israel ParaSport Center. His family home does not have an in-apartment safe room, so during missile warnings he must take the elevator down and then walk a flight of stairs to reach shelter. While he is physically able to do this, it is slow and extremely difficult—and not something that can realistically be repeated multiple times a day.

Here, Adam shares what it’s been like to navigate the constant warnings, sirens, and missile attacks as someone with a physical disability living in one of the most heavily affected areas of the country.

Happy 60th to the legendary wheelchair tennis champ Shraga Weinberg.

Thank you for taking on archery so we still get to see you around all the time (when it isn’t wartime).

Wishing you a year and decade of health, good shots, and plenty of reasons to smile 💙

“If my time comes, my time comes, but until the day comes, I’m gonna enjoy this life.”

Paralympic athlete and Israel ParaSport Center ambassador Asael Shabo lost his leg in a terror attack at the age of nine, an attack that also took the lives of several members of his family.

Asael was featured in this week's episode of the podcast What Came After, where, alongside a personal update from wartime Israel, he shared his personal story, reflecting on his journey to wheelchair basketball and speaking openly about trauma, resilience and the long path to recovery.

We're proud to have been part of that journey — and will remain committed to Asael and the thousands of Israelis with disabilities come to The Center.

What's it like being a social worker for people with disabilities during a war, inside a majorly-affected area? And even more than that, as a mother of a soldier? Ayelet Avraham, head of social services at the Israel ParaSport Center, shares the very real challenges, and how she find ways to worry about the sport center members, her family, and herself, all at the same time.
