In honor of International Women’s Day, we celebrate Dr. Irene Milliken Josselyn, the women of Josselyn, and those shaping mental health in our communities.

Josselyn was established by child psychiatrist Dr. Irene Milliken Josselyn who saw the need for affordable mental health treatment for children and families who were unable to afford private care.

Considered a true visionary, Dr. Josselyn founded the North Shore Mental Health Association in 1951 as a psychiatric clinic to serve families who could not afford private care. Her vision for the clinic was based on the principle of equity in accessing quality mental health services.

Her legacy continues through the women at Josselyn who serve thousands of individuals and families each year.

Stay tuned for a special feature highlighting the women behind the scenes at Josselyn who are making a difference.

Josselyn recently provided two FREE community Mental Health First Aid trainings.

In Waukegan, 28 adults completed Youth Mental Health First Aid, including school personnel, youth organizations, health care workers, and community members.

We also welcomed 13 teens to Teen Mental Health First Aid, representing Waukegan Public Schools, Evanston Township High School, Glenbrook South High School, Prospect High School, Deerfield High School, Glenbrook North High School, and more.

In honor of Black History Month, we are highlighting IPS Employment Specialist T’Keyah Jones and her reflections on mental health and employment in the Black community.

She shares how resilience, generational experiences, and job-related stress shape conversations about mental health. Through Josselyn’s Individual Placement and Support program, clients receive hands-on guidance and ongoing encouragement.
