Labels and diagnoses are incredibly important to a disabled person, often giving a roadmap to resources and a greater understanding of self. It is also important to recognize that a label is a way to understand characteristics, not the whole person. No one person is the same, including people with the same diagnoses and disabilities.

The direct support workforce crisis continues to impact people with intellectual and developmental disabilities across the U.S. In 2025, 88% of providers reported moderate or severe staffing shortages. Without enough direct support professionals, access to essential services is at risk.
