It's only cold if your standing still…
don't let the weather stop you from getting out there and enjoying a nice hearty walk or invigorating run. Here are CFAC's tips and tricks:
- Be prepared: It actually takes more than a warm jacket; think about your footwear - waterproof shoes or boots. A lightweight option that prevents moisture in your shoe makes your journey more enjoyable. Purchasing shoes with a water repellent fabric is a simple solution to keeping your feet dry.
- Traction: Avoid slick-soled shoes. Shoes that grip or provide traction are safer and prevent injuries. There are lots of options for shoes specifically made for running or walking on slippery winter surfaces. (IceBug, LLBean Snow Sneakers, or Snow Trax/slip on cleats).
- Socks: Sweat wicking polypropylene and wool are a fitting combination for keeping your feet dry and warm. Your feet will sweat even in cold weather. Wear socks that wick the sweat away from the skin. CFAC is a huge fan of SmartWool - the company started here in Colorado and it is the smart construction & fabric that make these socks a wise choice. Avoid cotton socks they simply do not wick nor offer any warmth that is needed for a comfortable experience in the brisk, cold outdoors.
- Your pace: Start at a nice easy pace for the first couple of minutes to warm up your muscles. Then pick up your pace to get your blood moving; the extra blood flow from a faster heart rate will actually keep you warm.
- Hydrate: Dehydration is accelerated in cold weather and at higher altitudes. The air is also drier here in Colorado and your lungs work even harder to humidify. The harder your body works the more you need to drink H20.
- Strange but true fact: This sounds crazy as a cold feet prevention tip, but we lose 10% of our heat from the top of our head. In order to keep the rest of your body warm - cover your head.
