Grandparents, what’s one thing you’re most grateful for this holiday season when it comes to your grandchildren?

As we look back on the blessings of the year, those little moments with our grandkids are what mean the most. The laughter, the hugs, and the memories made together.

National Call a Friend Day is a simple reminder that even a quick conversation can brighten someone’s day. Reaching out to a friend can bring comfort, connection, and a moment of joy during a busy season.

If someone comes to mind today, take a moment to call. Small gestures can mean more than we know.

This incredible Ministry of Consolation group joined us for dinner at Pumpernickel’s last night. St. Philip Neri’s “Mourning Glories” are dedicated and compassionate volunteers that aide parishioners with the funeral mass process. They are a special connection between SPN and Nolan’s that our whole community benefits from. Thank you all for your dedication and care.

The holiday season can stir up so many emotions, especially when someone you love is no longer here. While the world around us feels bright and busy, your heart may be moving at a very different pace, and that is okay.

Coping with the holidays is not about being cheerful on command. It is about giving yourself grace, honoring your feelings, and allowing space for both the heaviness and the small moments of comfort that may find you.

Light a candle. Hold onto a favorite tradition. Share a story. Or simply breathe. There is no right or wrong way to move through this season after a loss.
If this time feels difficult, please remember that you are not alone. Many others are walking this path too, each finding their own gentle rhythm. Be kind to yourself. Rest when you need to, and look for the tiny moments of peace that appear when you least expect them. They are reminders that love continues in its own quiet way.

Wishing you comfort, strength, and a little light this holiday season.

Today is National Poinsettia Day, a time to appreciate one of the most cherished symbols of the holiday season. For many families, poinsettias serve as gentle reminders of love, tradition, and the people who have touched our lives.

Whether you display one in honor of someone special or simply enjoy its beauty in your home, the poinsettia carries a quiet message of comfort and connection. Its bright color brings light to winter days, and its presence often stirs memories that warm the heart.

From all of us at Nolan Funeral Home, we hope this simple flower brings a moment of peace and reflection to your day. If you are remembering someone this season, know that you are held in our thoughts.

The History of our building and our founders.

Nolan Funeral Home was founded in 1948 by James P. Nolan, Sr. and his wife Anne T. Nolan. Jim and Anne ventured to open their own Funeral Home in Northport. A new building was erected and opened for business in October, 1948. They steadily built their business through hard work, and a determined mind, to give families the best service possible. Business did so well that they added-on to the original building in 1958. A year later their eldest son Jim, Jr. began working at the Funeral Home full time, and was followed by his brother Peter in 1963. The building underwent another expansion in 1968, to how it stands today.

The first funeral home in the Village of Northport was S. Robbins Funeral Home. It opened and was run out of a furniture store in 1894. In 1935 S. Robbins and Son Funeral Home, run by Harry Taylor and Robert N. Davis, opened a new building at 81 Scudder Avenue in Northport. It was the first separate building used only as a Funeral Home in the Town of Huntington. Harry Taylor managed the funeral home, with his partner Robert N. Davis. In 1946 Harry Taylor bought out his partner and changed the name to Taylor Funeral Home. In November of 1963 Harold Howe, a Funeral Director from Freeport, moved to Northport and started working for Mr. Taylor. In June of 1968, Harold bought the business from Mr. Taylor and ran the business until 1981, when he merged with Nolan Funeral Home. On July 1, 1982 the Nolan & Taylor-Howe Funeral Home began its business at 5 Laurel Avenue.

In 2018, third-generation owner Mark J. Nolan succeeded his father Jim Jr. and uncle Peter Nolan and re-established Nolan Funeral Home, Inc. in Northport Village. Mark began his career at Nolan & Taylor-Howe Funeral Home, Inc. in 1996 and will continue to work with the dedicated staff, to bring superior funeral service to all.

The funeral home has three viewing rooms, that range in size to accommodate any and all needs. We have a separate children’s play room/lounge, and are handicapped accessible. We encourage anyone to stop in and tour our beautiful building. Please also visit us online at www.nolanfh.com to learn about our staff, services, local resources and more.
