Feisty Rooster

Feisty Rooster For sometime, I and my family have suffered from ailments that the doctors don't seem to have answers for and only want to treat with medication.

I have lived in a stated of constant pain for years. Doctors to this day don't have a diagnosis for exactly what is causing it, and I have instead, been given a multitude of labels including fibromyalgia, RA, chronic fatigue. Most recently my daughter has been diagnosed with an unknown food allergy, which is forcing us to alter our diet (as a family in support of her) at a much faster rate than we thought we would. We want to eat more natural things, but as I did my research, I found that even things labeled as "healthy" were covered and treated in chemicals and the things labeled as "Organic" was simply out of our price range. It was then that I decided I wanted to raise some chickens for eggs and meat. This way there was at least something I could eat that I knew what it was fed etc. I also decided that I would try and grow some of my own vegetables to help us cut down on our grocery bill and get us eating healthy food. Not knowing a thing about farming, growing food, or how to take care of chickens, I began to research and network. Through this learning I found out how to integrate my wants (healthy natural food), needs(a garden that is rich in nutrients), and desires(for a way to support my family, while helping change others lives as well). And thus the concept for Feisty Rooster, our small, local, family run farm began.

I came across this and I HAD to share!!

A LETTER TO ELLEN DEGENERES
from Joel Salatin

September 25, 2019
Dear Ellen--

Now that you've launched your campaign, I'd like to encourage you to refine the message to . To lump all meat into a "bad for you and the environment" ball is incorrect, unfair, and offensive.

Roughly 75 percent of all the agricultural land in the world can't grow veggies. It's too steep, too infertile, too rocky, or two far from diesel fuel. But these areas grow grass. You could eat that grass all day and you'd die. Humans can't metabolize grass.

But the rumen bacteria inside an herbivore can upgrade grass to meat and milk, both extremely nutrient dense foodstuffs for humans. To deny humans the food value of 75 percent of the world's agriculture area is to condemn millions if not billions to starvation, and I know you wouldn't want that.

Feeding the world without animals? The numbers just don't stack up. Now how about food quality? Let's look at a short list of comparisons:

FOOD QUANTITY PROTEIN CALORIES

Beef 3 oz. (one serving) 25 grams 173

Quiona 3 cups 25 666

Black beans 2 cups 25 613

Edamame 1 cup 25 249

In case you missed it, 3 cups of quinoa and 2 cups of black beans is a pile. I might not want to be in the same room with you if you've eaten that much.

A wonderful letter sent to you from Amanda Radke, a rancher, points out that your fave CoverGirl makeup uses ingredients from beef. And her point about beef producing less greenhouse (GHG) gases than landfills is good too.

Perhaps the most disingenuous aspect of your crusade is that you refuse to parse the difference between regenerative and degenerative beef production models. To refuse to recognize the clear soil building versus soil depleting reality of a mob stocking herbivorous solar conversion lignified carbon sequestration model offends anyone with an ounce of functioning brain fatty acids (most of which come from animal fats).

So how about we stop the war against diversity and nutrition? How about we stop the war against enough food? Let's appreciate that people are different and that if you thrive on a non-meat diet, good for you. Most don't. You of all people should appreciate diversity and not demand a one size fits all approach.

You should come and visit Polyface. You would see such abundance in wildlife, insect life, pollinators living in, above, and around our perennial pasture grasslands it will make your heart sing. I challenge you to go visit where your veggies are grown and tell me those areas germinate as much life diversity. Go ahead, take a look.

How about let's promote eating good food, authentic food, ecologically enhancing food, from whatever source? And let's not bathe the world in uncharitable elitism. Hmmmm?

Respectfully,

Joel Salatin, Polyface Farm

ATTENTION! We are running a “dirty egg” special!! What is a dirty egg special?? It’s “no so clean eggs” as a discounted price. Some of the eggs may have dirty, mud...and possibly p**p on them. Does it affect the egg any? Not if you wash them properly before use. $1.25/dozen. Quantity is very limited. Message me if you want some! “justneedtowashtheeggs

A few times it has been mentioned that $3 for a dozen eggs is a bit high. I cannot disagree. I also cannot lie, nor choose to do so, about the fact that you can buy eggs from the store for about $.90 a dozen.

So, why are your prices so high?

Well, I have 8 reasons plus some:
1) Feisty
2) Greedy
3) The Brahma trio
4) Houdini
5) Lacey
6) Firefly
7) Hawkeye
😎 Pepper

When you get your cheap eggs from the store, you are getting eggs from chickens who have not seen the light of day. They live in their filth, watch their neighbors die, live in a constant fear of when their time will come. They are locked in small cages and are never allowed to leave. ☹️

What about cage free?🤔

So, these egg companies take away the cages, score for them because they don't have to pay 💲💲💲 for them. Then they mark up the price and market it as cage free (which is not a lie) and a healthier option. They don't tell you that they stuff 20 to 30 thousand birds into a barn about the size of a foot ball field. They don't tell you that the chickens have no room to move, and again left to watch their friends die next to them from disease due to filthy conditions. They never see the light of day, and are never let outside. 😢

Okay, but free range? You cannot tell me that they are not healthy.

Free range is a wonderful idea. The laws state that the chickens must have access to the out doors. Not surprising though, they don't express the quality (size, light, grass and the likes) or length of time in which the chickens need to be out there. So, we take the cage free, football field sized barn with one small spot that 20 to 30 thousand birds are to go in and out of. It's not going to happen. Then the cycle begins again. Chickens left to die and have their friends who are sick and dying. Here you are now, still paying $5.00 for 12 eggs at Walmart, with the false impression that you are doing good for these poor animals. ☹️😢😭

My chickens:
1) Favorite fruit is watermelon 🍉
2) Love to lay their eggs in the same nesting box every time, the last nesting box to the left of the coop 🥚
3) Love laying in the sun ☀️
4) Love dust bathing
5) Have their own personalities that make you laugh with happiness 😂
6) Come running to see me every time I go outside to say "Hi" (mostly because they know I have treats)🍇🥦
7) Sing a song of pride every time they lay an egg🎵
😎 Make me understand there is more to life than what we see 👁️🌎

Plus some:
My eggs being sold are at a store price, but not a big box store, a family owned store👨‍👨‍👦‍👦. They need to pay their bills🧾, they need to feed their stomachs🥚, they need to keep pushing to make their dream a reality. I genuinely believe if my chickens knew the difference they make by providing eggs and allowing me to sell them, they would be okay with it. ♥️

This all said, times are hard☹️, which is part of the reason I have chickens. However, my chickens and I don't wanna see people go hungry. Borderline Crazy or not, we wanna help. If you genuinely need eggs and money is tight, message me (noone needs to know), we can figure it out. Just know that the money I make goes right back to the chicken fund so they can continue to live happily and healthy. ♥️☺️🐔

Last note:
The egg color doesn't determine the quality of the egg. It's the health of the chicken, and to some extent the intention of the chicken tender (caffeinated chicken tender if I am drinking coffee😂). If you put in the love, you get it back.

As you know, most people now a days are vitamin D deficient. There are a couple of ways to increase your Vitamin D levels...one is by your direct exposure to sunlight. But with work demands, most people don’t get enough sunlight so they turn to supplements as a way to increase their Vitamin D levels. But what if you could avoid having to take even more “pills” everyday? There are some great natural sources of Vitamin D found in our food and eggs are one of them!! An average large “cage free” egg (mass production egg) has about 50IU of Vitamin D. BUT that amount can increase if the chickens is exposed to more natural sunlight. You can get up to 200IU per egg just from the chickens exposure to natural sunlight. So put down the supplements and eat some local, pasture raised eggs. Your body will thank you!
