During Stamford Public Schools' professional development today, our staff provided psychoeducation on the definition of trauma, it’s developmental effects, and introduced real-time intervention skills and tools teachers can use with their students. These practices create safe, supportive environments where students can thrive academically and emotionally, while also reducing stress and burnout among educators. Ultimately, a trauma-informed approach fosters a more compassionate and resilient school community.

When Jason first walked into Family & Children’s Agency’s ASPIRE after-school program as a sixth grader, he was nervous and unsure of himself. “I remember being really nervous, but it felt safe. Everyone had similarities,” he said.

At home, communication was difficult - his mom didn’t speak English, and his older siblings had already moved out. At ASPIRE, Jason found adults who helped bridge that gap and gave him the encouragement he needed.

“Ally was an adult you can trust, someone you can look up to,” Jason said. “I respected her so much that I’d do my homework to make her proud.”

With the support of ASPIRE and FCA’s Sullivan-Kindler Scholarship, Jason graduated from Porter & Chester Institute and is preparing to attend CT State Norwalk. He still keeps in touch with ASPIRE staff who helped shape his path.

“Without them I would’ve been lost,” he said.

She spoke about different clinical approaches to grief and loss, how signs and symptoms can differ developmentally, some therapeutic techniques they can use for each age group, and local resources for further support or treatment. Thank you, NPS, for having us!

A Second Chance: Luis’ Story and the Impact You Made This Year -

At 16, Luis was found face-down in a park after overdosing on fentanyl. Years of trauma and instability had taken their toll. When he joined Family & Children’s Agency’s Therapeutic Foster Care program, Luis needed more than a place to live - he needed people who wouldn’t give up on him.

With support from FCA and his foster parents, Kati and Dan, everything changed. Today, he’s graduating high school, planning for college, and part of a family that believes in him.

“I didn’t know people like this existed,” Luis said. “My goal used to be to make money for drugs. Now I have a future.”

Luis’s story is featured in our 2024–2025 Annual Report, highlighting how your support transforms lives.
