March 25 is National Medal of Honor Day; Norwalk has two recipients

Today is a time to reflect on extraordinary courage and the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation.

The City of Norwalk holds a rare and solemn distinction: it is the hometown of two Medal of Honor recipients—men who gave their lives in service to others.

Daniel “Danny” Shea, an Army medic in Vietnam, embodied selflessness on the battlefield, tending to the wounded under fire. He was killed in action on May 14, 1969, sacrificing his life while caring for his fellow soldiers.

John Magrath, a member of the legendary 10th Mountain Division “Ski Troops,” displayed remarkable bravery during World War II in the mountains of Italy. He was killed in action on April 14, 1945—just 24 days before the war in Europe came to an end.

Both were sons of East Norwalk. They grew up in the same community—walking its streets, shaped by its values. Danny found joy on the waters of the Norwalk Islands, while John was active as a Boy Scout and sang in the choir at Christ Episcopal Church.

Their stories remind us that heroes do not come from distant places—they come from our neighborhoods, our schools, and our communities.

As a city, Norwalk will always remember their courage, their sacrifice, and their enduring legacy. See the comments below for short bios about their life and service. 👇🇺🇸

Today, September 19, is National POW/MIA Recognition Day — first established in 1979 and observed every year on the third Friday in September.

Across the nation, ceremonies honor the courage of those who endured captivity and returned home, as well as those who never made it back.

🙏 Please take a moment to remember Norwalk’s 60 former Prisoners of War and 43 still Missing in Action:

It seems there's some uncertainty on who to name the new South Norwalk School after. The right answer is Norwalk native Private First Class John David Magrath, U.S. Army, killed in action in WWII, and the recipient of the Medal of Honor. The Medal of Honor is the highest award that a member of the military can receive for valor while engaging enemy forces. He was an Eagle Scout, a member of the choir at Norwalk High School, and a member of the choir at Christ Episcopal Church. He left high school early to join the ski troops. Magrath Elementary School was established on Richards Avenue in 1956 on the grounds of the now Norwalk Community College East Campus. It was torn down in 1985 to build that campus. There's your solution, Norwalk. Could we make it happen? We're confident the Magrath family, who still live in Norwalk, would appreciate that. 🇺🇸👍

Ruby Shaw was instrumental in preserving a school in the city's South Norwalk neighborhood in the 1980s.

National Airborne Day on August 16 honors the military's airborne divisions of the Armed Forces.

August 16, 1940, marks the date of the first official Army parachute jump at Ft. Benning, Georgia. The successful jump validated the innovative concept of inserting U.S. ground combat forces behind a battle line by parachute. These sky soldiers represent some of the most prestigious and expertly trained forces in the United States Army.
