Nix the gravity knife ban now: With reform set to come to his desk a third time, Gov. Cuomo must do the right thing. Every year, thousands of hardworking and otherwise law-abiding New Yorkers are arrested for carrying what, to them and to most of us, looks like nothing more than a common folding knife. These are the kinds of useful, everyday tools that can be purchased at hardware and sporting goods stores across the city, and owning one just so happens to be punishable by up to one year in prison. Since 2003, there have been an estimated 85,000 arrests for gravity knife possession. The people targeted are by large working-class and overwhelmingly people of color. According to the Legal Aid Society, approximately 85% of all people charged with the criminal possession of a gravity knife are Black or Latino.
