🖤🕯️Today is Black Balloon Day. A day to remember and honor the lives lost to overdose. People who were loved, who were part of families and friendships and communities. People who should still be here.
In Maine this year, 390 people were lost to overdose. It’s the lowest number we’ve seen in three years after the sharp increase during the pandemic. It shows that prevention efforts, harm reduction, and recovery support are making a difference. But it also needs to be said clearly: 390 is still far too many. Even one death is a tragedy.
Overdose touches more people than most realize. You may not have experienced it personally, but almost everyone knows someone who knows someone who has lost someone. The ripple effect is everywhere.
For anyone still struggling with substance use, we want you to hear this today: your life matters. You are not beyond help, and you are not beyond hope. If you or someone you care about could use support, The HILLS Recovery Center is here. We offer free Narcan, free training for individuals and groups, and a community space for people navigating recovery, grief, and everything in between.
But remember, you don’t have to work in this field to be part of the solution! Everyone can help prevent overdose through compassion, awareness, and being prepared with Narcan just in case.
