We spent this morning at Community Health Center, Inc. In Middletown with the CT AHEC Program Office team from UConn Health for the Food is Medicine Conference!

The discussions we had went beyond "just eat healthier", we talked about culture, affordability, and accessibility. Food insecurity is a huge issue, not only in Eastern CT, but globally. It was great to be in the same room as other health professionals, community advocates, CHWs and community members.

The make your own protein bowl segment was also amazing ❤️

We will be going to events all weekend! Make sure you follow our page for the scoop on what is happening at the Health Education Center

Our GYSD event was a huge success! Thank you to the Windham Senior Center & Human Services Department for partnering with us on this event for the 4th year in a row. Our Youth Health Service Corps high schoolers are fabulous for helping prep and learning more about intergenerational learning.

Many thanks to Youth Service America and The Hershey Company for awarding our youth with the Hershey's Heartwarming Heroes Grant! We could not have done this without you.

Special thank you to Costco for donating a $100 gift card toward food.

Our hearts are full as we dance our way into this weekend.

What is Global Youth Service Day (GYSD)?

GYSD is the longest-running annual youth service-learning event. We are excited to work with the Windham Senior Center for the 4th year on their Spring Fling!

Our Youth Health Service Corps students have been working hard throughout this month to learn about intergenerational connections between them and the seniors in the community. Meaningful social connections between generations has been shown to positively impact mental health and well being in the aging population.

Our participation in this event would not be possible without the The Hershey Company and Youth Service America for their support through the Hershey's Heartwarming Heroes Grant.

We would also like to thank Costco for awarding our project a $100 gift card for food and drinks.

We are counting the hours till the party! Stay tuned for pictures and fun!

Held annually on April 11-17th, BMHW is a week-long campaign founded and led by the Black Mamas Matter Alliance to build awareness, activism, and community-building to amplify the voices, perspectives and lived experiences of Black Mamas and birthing people.

The week is intentionally held during National Minority Health Month and begins on April 11th annually to join dozens of global organizations in marking this day as International Day for Maternal Health and Rights – an opportunity to advocate for the elimination of maternal mortality, globally.

We are excited to share that we have been awarded the 2026 Hershey Heartwarming Young Heroes Grant from Service America and The Hershey Company ! 🎉We are incredibly grateful to Youth Service America for supporting our Youth Health Service Corps with their Global Youth Service Day project.

Because of this $250 mini grant, we’re ecstatic to be able to support the 4th Annual Spring Fling at the Windham Senior Center. Throughout April, our high school program has been exploring the importance of intergenerational communities and how this relates to the health and wellness of older adults.

Not only has our AHEC Department been working hard toward this event; we also wanted to give a special shout out to our Connecticut Department of Public Health Interns for working hard on the grant narrative and everything they are doing to support GYSD.

Make sure you are following our page to see more of what we are doing this Spring!
