The "Vegetable Lamb of Tartary"
In the Middle Ages, people across Europe and Asia genuinely believed in the Barometz, a "plant-animal" hybrid. According to the myth:

The Look: It was a lamb that grew directly out of the ground on a short, flexible stem.

The Lifestyle: The lamb would graze on all the grass within reach of its stalk.

The Wacky Ending: Once it ate all the grass in its circle, the stem would wither, and both the plant and the lamb would die.

The "Real" Twist
Travelers actually brought back "evidence" of these lambs! They were actually the rhizomes (root structures) of the Cibotium barometz fern. When flipped upside down, the fuzzy, wool-like brown fibers and the four protruding stems looked exactly like a small, golden-haired sheep.

It’s the ultimate "The Fool" energy—people were so committed to the wonder of the world that they decided "sheep-plant" was a perfectly logical explanation for a fuzzy fern.
