Karuna Wellness Studio

Karuna Wellness Studio Karuna Wellness Studio is built on acceptance and whole-body self-care. Welcome to Karuna: Nutrition + Movement, we're glad you’re here! First - KARUNA.

Karuna is a first-of-its-kind wellness studio offering nutrition counseling, cooking lessons and movement classes. Karuna was started by our owner Kate Thomas as an individual private nutrition practice in 2013. With a background in marketing and advertising, Kate always knew she wanted to build her practice into something bigger. During her first few years of counseling clients, the idea of Karuna came to shape - a place where children and adults can learn to take care of their bodies in a place that’s fun, warm, all-inclusive and non-judgemental. This dream has finally come alive as we open our doors to the community in June 2019 with a brand new office with two movement studios, a small teaching kitchen and a growing team of licensed Registered Dietitians to provide evidence-based, individualized nutrition counseling. So what does our company name mean? Karuna is a Sanskrit word that translates as compassion. In her years of counseling in her private practice, owner Kate found that her clients ability to make changes to their health and lifestyle came down to one thing - having compassion for their body and their choices. We are all SO HARD ON OURSELVES, and well, that's just not fair. At Karuna, we feel that self compassion is the first step to better health and positive relationships with food, and our goal is to teach children and adults to show more compassion for themselves with a whole-body approach: eating well, moving their bodies, sleeping, and decreasing stress. As always, our practice strives to provide a supportive, non-judgemental, body positive, and welcoming environment for all our clients. Next - NUTRITION. Well, this one is easier. This business was founded on a practice providing nutrition counseling using a "whole health" philosophy and we continue to pride ourselves on evidence-based, medical nutrition therapy implemented with a real life, whole food approach that is realistic and sustainable. With this, we will continue to take a strict "non-diet approach" as we continue to intertwine principles of intuitive eating and Health At Every Size®, to support our goal of compassion. We will continue to improve our program offerings for families struggling with meal planning, picky eaters, disordered eating and eating disorders, and weight management from a weight neutral, HAES approach. With our new kitchen space, we plan to that take our clients outside the office and into the kitchen, where we can truly foster a new relationship with food. And lastly - MOVEMENT. It is our goal to find new and creative ways to bring more movement options to our clients. Exercise does NOT mean putting in hours at the gym, and we strive to find new, fun ways to help our clients move their bodies with confidence and joy . Movement has been shown to decrease stress response in the body, and as a result, reduce the heart rate, lower blood pressure, and ease respiration. Movement can improve symptoms of anxiety and depression, teach self-soothing techniques, breathing, awareness of emotions, the ability to be present, and fosters the development of a positive and compassionate relationship with the body. For children, structured physical activity provides both an energy and emotional outlet. It decreases stress, teaches control, socialization, discipline and relaxation. We believe that joyful movement is critical to mental and physical health and well-being. We look forward to working and growing with you all! Please feel free to contact our office with questions about our practice, philosophy or to book an appointment. Phone // 781-269-1623

ONE FOOD WONDER: CHICKPEAS 🌱

This little legume is doing the most and we love her for it.

✨ Affordable? Yep.
✨ Easy to prep? Always.
✨ Nutrient-packed? Chickpeas UNDERSTOOD the assignment.

As dietitians, we’re all about making nutrition work for real life and chickpeas check every box:

✅ Fiber to support digestion and blood sugar
✅ Plant-based protein for meal satisfaction
✅ Iron, folate, magnesium, and more for energy + hormone support
✅ Pantry staple energy (aka there for you when nothing else is)

Toss ’em in a salad, crisp them in the oven, or blend them into a pasta sauce or creamy dip.

💬 What’s your favorite way to use chickpeas?

Have you heard of bigorexia?

It’s a lesser-known form of body dysmorphia that often flies under the radar, especially in boys, men, and q***r folks.

Unlike the typical fear of gaining weight, bigorexia is the obsession with getting bigger.

More muscle. More workouts. More protein. More control.

And while the pursuit of health is glorified, many are silently struggling with:

→ Disordered eating disguised as “bulking”
→ Overtraining at the gym out of fear, not joy
→ Avoiding rest days, meals out, or anything that interrupts the “grind”
→ Fixation on body size, leanness, and appearance

It’s normalized on social media.
It’s underdiagnosed in men.
And it’s impacting younger and younger kids.

So how do we treat it?
We start by creating space for men and boys to talk about food, body image, and mental health, without shame.

At Karuna, we use a non-diet, trauma-informed approach to help anyone struggling with food and body distress, regardless of gender.

One of the most powerful questions you can ask before moving your body:

✨ “What is my body telling me it needs today?” ✨

❌ Not “What did I eat today?”
❌ Not “What workout burns the most calories?”
❌ Not “What’s on my plan?”

But “What do I actually need?”

Mindful movement means moving with your body, not against it.

It’s a practice of tuning in, not checking out. And it starts with listening.

Maybe your body needs…
→ A long walk to clear your head.
→ A slow stretch to ease the tension in your shoulders.
→ A dance break between meetings because your brain is fried.
→ Or maybe… it needs full permission to rest.

So next time you’re deciding how (or whether) to move, try asking:

What would it look like to honor my body, just as it is?

This is what mindful movement really means.

And it’s one of the kindest things you can practice 💚

You’re not crazy for still feeling insecure in your body.

Even after years of unlearning. Even after healing your relationship with food.
Even after telling yourself you should be past this by now.

Because here’s the thing...

We live in a culture that teaches you to hate what’s natural and chase what isn’t even real.

Every decade, the “ideal” changes:
👖 2000s: thin with a thigh gap
🍑 2010s: hourglass with a big b***y
💉 2020s: buccal fat removal and ozempic

And behind all of it is the same message:

You’ll finally feel good once you look a certain way.

No wonder it still feels hard and exhausting

Body insecurity isn’t a flaw.

It’s a survival response in a world that profits off your shame.

In our latest blog, we unpack how this shows up and how to start finding peace with your body on YOUR terms.

In case you need a reminder why skipping meals isn’t something to aspire to 👇🏼

🥣 Blood sugar crashes
Without steady fuel, energy dips → brain fog, fatigue, and that 3pm crash hit hard.

🧠 Mood swings & anxiety
Your brain runs on glucose. When it’s low, irritability and overwhelm usually aren’t far behind.

🍽️ Rebound hunger
Skipping a meal doesn’t mean you need less, it usually means you’ll be ravenous later (and feel out of control around food).

🦠 Digestive symptoms
Inconsistent eating can throw off your gut rhythm → constipation, bloating, nausea.

🥬 Nutrient gaps
It’s harder to get what you need when your meals are sporadic, especially iron, B vitamins, fiber, and protein.

✨ You don’t need to eat perfectly.
But your body does need to be fed consistently.

And if you’re ready to stop skipping meals and start trusting your body again, our Karuna dietitians are here to help 💚

We take insurance too which means your sessions could be covered for $0 out of pocket🎉

The short answer? Maybe.

But we need to be thoughtful and intentional.

Elimination diets can help identify food triggers for conditions like IBS, SIBO, or autoimmune issues.

But for anyone with a history of disordered eating, the line between “healing” and restricting can get blurry fast.

Research shows that restriction, even for seemingly valid reasons, can trigger or exacerbate ED symptoms, especially in the absence of psychological support.

🔄 Many clients with a history of EDs report that elimination diets reignited old patterns: obsessing over ingredients, avoiding social situations, and becoming increasingly anxious around food.

That’s why the how matters just as much as the what.

✅ Are you supported by someone trained in BOTH GI care and eating disorder recovery?
✅ Are you making choices from curiosity, not fear?
✅ Can you reintroduce foods without spiraling?

Healing your gut shouldn’t come at the cost of food peace.

It is possible to work on root causes and protect your relationship with food.

Feeding yourself with ADHD isn’t about “trying harder.”

It’s about working with your brain, not against it.

When every step before eating feels like climbing a mountain, it’s not a lack of willpower.

It’s executive function barriers making something simple on paper… a lot more complicated in practice.

As dietitians, we see this all the time.

For someone without these challenges, preparing a meal might feel like one step.

For someone with ADHD, it can feel like ten: cleaning dishes first, deciding what to make, finding a fork, navigating decision fatigue, and finally… eating.

That’s why small, real-life strategies matter way more than perfect plans or Pinterest pantries.

✨ A few go-to meals you don’t have to think about
