Karuna Wellness Studio

Karuna Wellness Studio Karuna Wellness Studio is built on acceptance and whole-body self-care. Welcome to Karuna: Nutrition + Movement, we're glad you’re here! First - KARUNA.

Karuna is a first-of-its-kind wellness studio offering nutrition counseling, cooking lessons and movement classes. Karuna was started by our owner Kate Thomas as an individual private nutrition practice in 2013. With a background in marketing and advertising, Kate always knew she wanted to build her practice into something bigger. During her first few years of counseling clients, the idea of Karuna came to shape - a place where children and adults can learn to take care of their bodies in a place that’s fun, warm, all-inclusive and non-judgemental. This dream has finally come alive as we open our doors to the community in June 2019 with a brand new office with two movement studios, a small teaching kitchen and a growing team of licensed Registered Dietitians to provide evidence-based, individualized nutrition counseling. So what does our company name mean? Karuna is a Sanskrit word that translates as compassion. In her years of counseling in her private practice, owner Kate found that her clients ability to make changes to their health and lifestyle came down to one thing - having compassion for their body and their choices. We are all SO HARD ON OURSELVES, and well, that's just not fair. At Karuna, we feel that self compassion is the first step to better health and positive relationships with food, and our goal is to teach children and adults to show more compassion for themselves with a whole-body approach: eating well, moving their bodies, sleeping, and decreasing stress. As always, our practice strives to provide a supportive, non-judgemental, body positive, and welcoming environment for all our clients. Next - NUTRITION. Well, this one is easier. This business was founded on a practice providing nutrition counseling using a "whole health" philosophy and we continue to pride ourselves on evidence-based, medical nutrition therapy implemented with a real life, whole food approach that is realistic and sustainable. With this, we will continue to take a strict "non-diet approach" as we continue to intertwine principles of intuitive eating and Health At Every Size®, to support our goal of compassion. We will continue to improve our program offerings for families struggling with meal planning, picky eaters, disordered eating and eating disorders, and weight management from a weight neutral, HAES approach. With our new kitchen space, we plan to that take our clients outside the office and into the kitchen, where we can truly foster a new relationship with food. And lastly - MOVEMENT. It is our goal to find new and creative ways to bring more movement options to our clients. Exercise does NOT mean putting in hours at the gym, and we strive to find new, fun ways to help our clients move their bodies with confidence and joy . Movement has been shown to decrease stress response in the body, and as a result, reduce the heart rate, lower blood pressure, and ease respiration. Movement can improve symptoms of anxiety and depression, teach self-soothing techniques, breathing, awareness of emotions, the ability to be present, and fosters the development of a positive and compassionate relationship with the body. For children, structured physical activity provides both an energy and emotional outlet. It decreases stress, teaches control, socialization, discipline and relaxation. We believe that joyful movement is critical to mental and physical health and well-being. We look forward to working and growing with you all! Please feel free to contact our office with questions about our practice, philosophy or to book an appointment. Phone // 781-269-1623

One thing we talk about a lot in recovery is how easy it is to focus on what still feels hard.

The anxiety that hasn’t gone away yet. The food that still feels challenging. The thoughts that still show up.

But progress in recovery often shows up in smaller, quieter shifts that are easy to miss if you’re only looking for big milestones.

Maybe meal decisions feel a little less exhausting.

Maybe food takes up slightly less mental space than it used to.

Maybe the spiral after eating something unexpected doesn’t last as long.

Those moments matter. They’re often real signs that your relationship with food and your body is changing.

Recovery isn’t perfect or linear. But noticing what’s going right can be just as important as noticing what still feels hard.

💚 We’d love to hear from you. What’s a small sign of progress you’ve noticed in your own recovery? 👇🏼

Finding the right support for your health can make a big difference 💚

What we see over and over again is that people don’t need more rules.

They need support that actually considers the full context of their lives.

Stress.
Sleep.
Work.
Family.
Mental health.
Movement.
Food.

All of these things shape how we feel in our bodies.

When care only focuses on one piece, it can miss the bigger picture.

At Karuna, our goal is to create a space where people feel supported, listened to, and guided in a way that’s realistic and sustainable.

We offer nutrition counseling and trauma-informed personal training designed to support your health from a more holistic perspective.

The way we talk about food around kids matters more than most of us realize.

For a long time, food conversations have been built around a simple dichotomy: Good vs. bad.

Healthy vs. unhealthy.

Foods you should feel proud of eating and foods you should feel guilty about.

The problem is that kids often internalize those labels in ways we don’t intend.

“Good foods” can start to feel like foods they should eat to be approved of, while “bad foods” can become foods they feel shame about, hide, or over-focus on.

Small shifts in language can help break that pattern.

Instead of labeling foods as good or bad ➡️ we can talk about what foods do in the body.

Instead of rewarding or punishing eating ➡️ we can encourage curiosity about hunger, fullness, and satisfaction.

Instead of tying food choices to being “good” ➡️ we can keep a child’s identity separate from what’s on their plate.

These shifts might seem small, but over time they help kids learn that food is not a moral test. It’s something that fuels them, supports them, and can also be enjoyed 💚

Introducing our new biweekly meal series, Bento Boxes 🥳🍱

One of our favorite “real life” meals ✨

They’re versatile, low-effort, and many of the ingredients are shelf-stable… which means fewer “there’s nothing to eat” moments and more meals that just work.

When we build something like this as dietitians, we’re thinking about a few things:

➡️ Protein helps you stay full and steady, especially in the afternoon when energy dips hit.

➡️ Fat adds satisfaction and helps you absorb certain nutrients from the rest of your plate.

➡️ Carbs give your brain quick, usable energy so you’re not white-knuckling it to dinner.

➡️ Fruit brings fiber and natural sweetness, which makes the whole thing feel more enjoyable.

And something salty or briny? That’s flavor. And flavor is part of nourishment too.

We’ll be sharing a new “real life” meal every other week — simple, balanced ideas you can actually see yourself making.

Tell us — are you more of a sweet bento person or savory? 👀💚

Supplements can feel so confusing. 🤯
Do I need one? Are they regulated? How do I know what’s actually safe?

Our Supplements 101 carousel breaks it down so you can feel more confident and informed — not pressured.

Inside we cover:
✨ How to know if you might benefit from a supplement

Remember: supplements can support health in certain situations, but they’re not magic — and they’re definitely not one-size-fits-all.

We also wrote a deep dive on one of the most talked-about supplements right now: berberine — what it is, what the research actually says, and who should (and shouldn’t) take it.

Canned salmon is one of those foods that doesn’t get much attention… but honestly?

It should 👏🏼

Because when someone tells us they’re exhausted, overwhelmed, or just don’t feel like cooking, we’re not thinking about elaborate recipes.

We’re thinking about options that are simple, affordable, and actually filling.

Canned salmon is one of those.

✅ It’s got protein.
✅ It’s got omega-3s.
✅ It’s shelf stable.
✅ And it can turn a random plate of crackers and veggies into a balanced meal.

Swipe through to see how we think about it nutritionally and a few ways to use it in real life.

Today is the first day of National Eating Disorders Awareness Week.

When someone you love is struggling with an eating disorder, it can feel overwhelming. You might wonder what to say, what not to say, or how to truly help.

Swipe through for supportive, practical ways to show up with compassion. →

Remember: you don’t have to be perfect. You don’t need the “right” script. What matters most is leading with empathy, staying connected, and reminding them they’re valued beyond their body or food choices.

Eating disorders are serious mental health conditions — not phases, attention-seeking, or a lack of willpower. Support, understanding, and professional care can make a meaningful difference.

Let this week be a reminder to approach these conversations with care — and to reduce stigma wherever we can. 🤍

If you or someone you love is struggling, you’re not alone.

Things we do that DON’T center diet culture ✨

Not centering diet culture doesn’t mean not caring about health 👏🏼

It means caring about you as a whole person, not a number or a set of “shoulds.”

It means asking better questions.
Making room for real life.
And letting food support your life instead of running it.

Swipe through to see what that actually looks like in practice for us as dietitians 💚

⤵️ And let us know which one speaks to you the most!

Information and recommendations for PCOS can be really mixed.

And trying to understand or manage symptoms can start to feel overwhelming fast.

A lot of people are given advice that focuses almost entirely on weight, restriction, or doing everything “perfectly.” And that usually isn’t helpful, or sustainable.

Working with a HAES-aligned dietitian can look very different.

✅ It means focusing on what actually supports your symptoms and quality of life.
✅ It means making nutrition changes that fit into a normal routine.
✅ It means looking at things like blood sugar, hormones, energy, and nourishment, not just the number on the scale.

PCOS care doesn’t have to be all-or-nothing or rooted in control.

If you’re curious about supplements that often come up in PCOS conversations, like inositol, we break it down in our latest blog — what it is, why it’s recommended, and when it might (or might not) be helpful.

Comment “BLOG” and we will send it your way!

And let us know what PCOS questions you want covered next 💚
